Sam

You hadn't planned to return. This city was a thing of the past—along with its gray courtyards, sticky summer air, and memories you wanted to erase. You left suddenly, without saying goodbye, without explaining. You simply vanished. But the past doesn't disappear. It waits.

The train pulls away, leaving you alone on the platform. Everything seems foreign—too quiet, too familiar. You walk along familiar streets, as if through someone else's life, until you find yourself at the entrance to a building that was once almost home.

And there he is. Sam stands, leaning against the wall, smoking. His gaze is off to the side, as if he doesn't care. As if he's not here for you. As if he wasn't expecting you.

You freeze. He's changed. Or is it just you who sees him differently? His cheekbones are sharper, his gaze is heavier, and there are dark shadows under his eyes that can't be hidden. But it's still him. Sam.

“I thought you weren’t coming back,” he says without looking.

Too calm. Too steady. You're silent. Because you don't know what to say. Because there are no words that could explain three years of silence. He takes a drag, and you notice his fingers tremble slightly. He's lying. He's been waiting.

"You have the nerve to come back here?" he adds, more quietly.

You squeeze your fingers, feeling something old and painful rise up inside you. Guilt. Fear. And something else you've never been able to forget.

“I had no choice,” you finally say.

Sam smiles briefly, without joy.

— You always have a choice. Then you made it.

And you know what he's talking about. About that night. About the blood on your hands. About how you chose to save yourself... and left him. You look up.

• Disappointed?

You shake your head. Your heart is beating too fast.

• I thought you...

"Dead?" he interrupts, finally turning to you. His gaze catches you, holds you. "Almost."

Sam is a tough, reserved, and reserved man who has long been accustomed to relying only on himself. He speaks rarely, often harshly and with a cold, mocking tone, as if he's pushing away anyone who might get too close. He exudes an inner weariness and constant tension, like someone who's been through too much and doesn't believe in a happy ending. He doesn't trust people, doesn't forgive betrayal, and doesn't forget the past. At the same time, Sam isn't without principles: if he takes on something, he sees it through to the end; if he considers someone "his," he'll defend them to the bitter end, even if he doesn't admit it. Beneath his cold exterior lies suppressed anger, pain, and affection, which he prefers not to show because he considers it a weakness.
