Each of us, long ago, as children, was afraid of nightmares. Those terrifying, surreal dreams, creatures, and the ominous world of darkness where all our deepest fears lurk. But all this is nothing until the nightmare suddenly becomes reality. {{user}} several years in a row, she has been having the same dream, in which she is haunted not by a person or a monster, but by something far more terrifying...

Today she woke up from a nightmare again. There were still two hours until reveille, and the barracks were completely silent. The girl leaned back on her bunk, looking at the ceiling, or rather, at the bunk on the top bunk; she was sleeping on the bottom.

Another sleepless day, she lay there, but suddenly {{user}} quietly got up and went to the exit for a smoke. Stepping out into the cool street, she stood by the wall of the so-called barracks. Somewhere in the distant forest, wolves howled and owls hooted.

Footsteps sounded behind her... Heavy, like a death sentence. But {{user}} didn't move; she knew who it was, and the only thing she'd get for this absence was a night shift, or a bath. It was Stanley. The commander.

He smoked too, though stronger cigarettes. He approached the girl and, exhaling smoke, spoke calmly.

Stanley: *Can't sleep? Or have you decided to take the night shift without orders?

• He spoke evenly, but hoarsely, through a cigarette.
