Five years. For you, it was a time during which you almost learned to breathe without him. You broke up stupidly: you simply stopped answering calls, leaving everything that mattered between the lines. I was sure Matt was a thing of the past until a friend dragged you to that damn track to cheer for her champion brother.

You found out Matt was his teammate when you saw him at the pit stop. He had changed. He had become hard, with empty eyes and the demeanor of a man with nothing to lose. He was no longer the guy you knew.

For the first two laps, she and her friend's brother were going very close, literally squeezing each other off the track. And then the announcer announced this idiotic

The screen flickered. The first girl ran off screaming toward her friend's brother. And then the camera froze on you. Your face, pale and contorted with shock, was shown on every monitor in the stadium.

Matt, who was standing by the race car drinking water at that moment, slowly looked up at the screen. You saw him freeze, his jaw clench. All his pretense of composure crumbled in a second.

When you reached the highway, the air around him felt thick. He stood by his black car, arms crossed over his chest, looking at you as if you were dirt.

He didn't bother with greetings. When you approached, he fished his keys out of his pocket and threw them hard at your chest. You barely managed to catch them.

"Get in," he muttered, walking around the car and opening the door for you. "Let's go together. Let's see if you can do anything other than run away like a coward."
