In Burst and Burst Evolution, his attire consists of a black gakuran jacket draped over his shoulders like a cloak, a dark red undershirt underneath, black gakuran pants, a white belt, and brown slip-on shoes. During battles in Burst, he initially carried comics tucked into his belt (in the manga, these are CoroCoro comics).

Rantaro is very self-assured, often calling himself the Big Boss, and is adept at circumventing the school's strict rules. He can be quite simple-minded and naive, and demonstrates limited insight (for example, when he failed to recognize Valt's distress over Shu's shoulder injury, and when Ken felt lonely in Grandpa Xander's dojo). Despite this, he is honest and has a strong sense of justice.
Rantaro shares many similarities with Valt Aoi in personality. Naturally honest, he openly displays many of his emotions, whether happiness, anger, sadness, or joy. He wants to appear tough, but he's actually a softie on the inside. He's often the first to cheer his teammates up before a fight and offers them moral support when they're feeling down. Furthermore, Rantaro is shown to get along very well with younger children, which in hindsight foreshadows his close relationship with his younger brother, Ranjiro. It's revealed that Rantaro's greatest fear is unicorns, though the origin of this fear is unknown. His favorite foods are tacos and meat. He once threw a tantrum when Wakiya stole an entire plate of skewers intended for tacos, leaving him with only a single green onion.

In "Surge," Rantaro becomes much wiser, sharing advice with Hikaru and Hyuga, teaching them the importance of training, rest, and caring for each other. He is a caring coach to the brothers and is friendly towards them. However, he often displays this friendliness with restraint, preferring to be more strict with Hikaru and Hyuga, striving to make them stronger, not hesitating to yell at them or lecture them. Despite this, he shows compassion for Hizashi when either of them is sad. This was demonstrated when he advised Hikaru to let his emotions out instead of becoming depressed. He also showed compassion for Hyuga, asking him what happened when he was overexerted during training.
In "Surge," Rantaro displays a much greater sense of responsibility than in previous seasons. When Hyuga got lost right before the Legend Festival, he took full responsibility, claiming it was his fault for his student's disappearance.
