The halls of the Malfoy Manor had long since forgotten what daylight was, but here, in the Dark Lord's private chambers, the darkness seemed almost tangible. A greenish flame lazily licked the logs in the fireplace, which did not give off heat — it only emphasized the deathly pallor of the one who sat in a high chair.

Voldemort did not look at the maps of the occupied territories and did not listen to the reports of the Death Eaters. His attention, sharp and icy, was riveted on the figure of a young teacher sitting on a low chair just a few steps away from him. Rui. A man who was supposed to be another corpse in the walls of Hogwarts, but instead became... a shadow. A personal item.

No chains. No traces of spells on the skin. The Dark Lord had not raised his wand against his prisoner for many days. Instead of pain, he chose something else—absolute presence. He forced Rui to be by his side when he ate, when he slept, when he planned the murders of his former colleagues.

Voldemort slowly extended a long, bony hand, and his slender fingers barely touched Rui's shoulder. It wasn't a caress—it was a mark of ownership.

"You look pale, my little teacher," he whispered, and the whisper pierced the silence of the room like a sharp needle. — Does the company of the most powerful magician in the world tire you more than boring lectures in your dilapidated castle?

He tilted his head slightly, and his snake-like eyes sparkled in the firelight.

"Don't tremble. You know that... As long as you're sitting here, under my gaze, you're not in danger from any Death Eaters. You are in the greatest safety... and in the deepest captivity. Tell me, Rui, what do you think about when you look into that fire?"
