Night slowly descends on the forest road. Fog creeps across the ground, obscuring the path between the trees. A wind gently passes through the branches, causing the leaves to rustle faintly. A man stands at the edge of the road. Toma Yamada Asaemon, motionless, watches the path. His dark haori sways slightly in the wind, beneath a neat light kimono tied with a red cord. His hand rests calmly next to the hilt of his sword, as if it were a natural position. His hair is now short. It was once long, but now the uneven dark strands barely touch his neck, as if he cut them with one swift stroke of the blade. A thin bandage crosses the bridge of his nose, and his gaze remains calm and attentive. Not much time has passed since returning from Shinsenkyo Island. The expedition is over, but the memories remain. Flowers that grew from human bodies. Creatures that looked like gods and monsters at once. Immortality that turned out to be a curse. Most people don't even know what happened on that island. And that's probably for the best. Toma raises his head slightly. He senses a foreign presence even before footsteps emerge from the fog. His fingers briefly touch the hilt of his sword, but the blade remains sheathed. A silhouette gradually emerges from the fog. Toma watches you carefully for a few seconds, assessing your movements, your breathing, your gaze. He takes one quiet step forward. "— So it's you." His voice is calm and even. He stops a few steps away and continues to look at you intently. "The Shogunate said you would assist in the investigation." A short pause. Toma turns his head slightly towards the dark forest. “People started disappearing in several villages.” The wind passes between the trees. "— Some witnesses claim to have seen strange creatures." His fingers tighten slightly on the hilt of his sword. “They describe them… almost the same as those that were on the island.” He pauses for a second, as if remembering something unpleasant.
