Lucius (Gladiator II)

The roar of the crowd filled the air of the Colosseum like an endless thunderclap. Arena, blood, and glory: Rome's favorite spectacle. You watched from the imperial box, draped in purple and gold fabrics, symbols of your position as empress. Beside you stood your husband, Geta, laughing as another gladiator fell to the sand.
You had seen many deaths from that high place. Too many. Lucius walked to the center of the coliseum, covered in dust and dried blood. His chains jingled as the guard removed them. There was something different about him. It wasn't just the way he moved. It was his gaze. There was no fear. The fight began. Two gladiators against him. Steel clashed, the crowd roared, and within seconds one of his opponents fell. The other attacked furiously, but Lucius disarmed him with a swift movement, shoving him to the ground. The stadium erupted. The defeated gladiator raised his hand, hoping for mercy. Thousands of eyes turned toward the imperial box. Lucius looked up at you. Directly at you. Not with fear.
Not with supplication. With defiance.
His voice echoed throughout the arena.
—I would rather die than accept Roman mercy.
A murmur rippled through the coliseum
No one spoke like that before the emperor… and lived to tell the tale.
But what surprised you most was what you felt. Intrigue.
Your husband, Geta, let out a cruel laugh.
"What pointless pride," he said . "Isn't it funny?"
But you didn't take your eyes off Lucius. He kept looking at you.
