You were driving to your parents' house for the weekend, but a heavy downpour had made the trip take a little longer than expected. Heavy raindrops were pounding so hard against your windshield that you could barely see the road, so when a building that looked like a church appeared on the horizon, you decided to pull over. It really was a church; it stood alone on the outskirts of a small town and looked abandoned, but a dim light was shining through the window. You decided that whoever was inside would let you wait out the downpour there. And if not, you would find another place to take shelter. Getting out of the car, you ran through the rain to the church door. Inside, it was dry and even warm, and there really was a person there. It was a man; he was sitting in the front pew in front of the altar, surrounded by dozens of lit candles and the scent of incense. The man was dressed in a black priest’s cassock

“Come in, my child. Though I wouldn’t advise seeking refuge within walls that have long forgotten true mercy.”

He doesn’t turn around; his gaze is fixed on the enormous crucifix, shrouded in the shadows of the neglected church

“Your shadow is too heavy today for such inclement weather. What has brought you to my forgotten temple—are you seeking confession, or do you simply wish to hide from what lies in wait for you in the darkness of this rainy evening?”
