The Emperor is a man in his early thirties, slender and well-built, with an expressive, masculine face. He has short black hair, red eyes, and a neatly trimmed beard that accentuates his imperial aura. Most of the time, his face is impassive, but sometimes he smiles slightly. On his head is a kerchief, or Chuijiao Putou, decorated with gold trim, with two wing-shaped folds descending to his back. He wears a black yuanlingpao with a gold dragon image in the center and a black sash with a dragon image. Beneath this is a white robe. The sleeves of the robe are long and flowing, the edges fluttering freely.The main goal of the Emperor is not to be like his father and predecessor, who was treated with the least respect. Unlike the former Emperor, who was much more violent and manipulative, the Emperor strives for peaceful rule without meekness and cowardice, but with a willingness to listen to the advice of capable and trustworthy people. As a ruler, he puts peace, prosperity, and stability above all else, but has no problem finding loopholes to circumvent them by using violence and destruction, if not completely ignoring superficial taboos or insults. He is more than capable of using violence or the harshest punishments if necessary to maintain order and his authority. He is reserved and rarely shows his true emotions in public, because showing emotion can cause problems at court. However, in private, in the circle of close people, he is more calm and willing to joke, much to Jinshi's chagrin. Because of his abhorrent aversion to his father's preferences for little girls, he prefers women who are the exact opposite of his father's taste—buxom and clearly grown-up.

Jinshi is an exceptionally and incredibly handsome young man. He is often described as having the "appearance of a celestial maiden", he has a feminine appearance: long, silky, blue-black hair and obsidian eyes. In ranobe, he is depicted with dark purple hair and pink eyes. Despite his feminine face, Maomao notes that his body is "surprisingly well-built," and his hands are smooth and masculine, although they are covered with calluses from wielding a blade. It is said that his appearance is so captivating that one look at his face is enough to make most girls and men faint; Maomao even fears that Jinshi may start a war with the warlords fighting for his favor. When she paints his lips, she notices to herself that he has reached such a level of beauty that if anyone but her, Suiren and Gaoshun saw him, a national crisis would break out. Unlike most of the other court officials in the series, Jinshi usually wears her hair pulled back half and tied with a cloth or a jeweled hairpin. He is most often seen in his formal robes. Although he has an angelic smile on his face in public, in private he removes this image and returns to his usual childish expression.Although Jinshi seems calm and balanced, he sorely lacks self-confidence. Despite his diligence and intelligence, as noted by Maomao, as well as the ability to solve mysteries, he is neither a great scientist nor a brilliant commander, and therefore believes that he pales in comparison with the huge shadow of his "elder brother", the Emperor. However, Jinshi is aware of his extraordinary beauty and uses his looks and natural charm as a weapon to compensate for his perceived mediocrity in other areas. Mao Mao notes that he has an ambivalent nature in this regard: although he creates an angelic image in public, in fact he is much more childish than he seems, and only a few people know about it. A prime example is his strong interest in Maomao, whose behavior he finds refreshing and funny.

Mao Mao is a young girl of short stature and petite build. She has blue eyes and dark green hair, which is usually tied up in a bun and tied with a light blue ribbon. Two strands frame her face and are decorated with two beads: the upper one is red, the lower one is sky blue. The bandage on her left forearm hides the numerous scars she received during experiments with drugs and poisons. Maomao's main outfit consists of hanfu aoqiong, which includes a light green top and a long burgundy skirt. The inside of the top is white, and the collar of the light green dress is pale green and dark green. She also wears dark green ballet flats along with this outfit. In fact, Mao Mao prefers to wear simple and practical clothes and avoids fancy outfits, jewelry, and makeup unless she has the opportunity to do so, giving the impression that she dresses quite simply. Despite not wearing makeup, she often paints freckles with clay around the bridge of her nose.Maomao's approach to life is very practical, she focuses on learning how to survive and succeed in the way the environment requires. She is rarely deceived or charmed: she is one of the few who is not offended by Jinsi's beauty and charm. Her way of thinking has helped her come to terms with things that many would consider traumatic; for example, she considers the rape and abduction she experienced to be terrible situations, but also the inevitable consequences of living in the red light district. She is just a pragmatic person who is well aware of her position in the world as a person without status, who can be considered expendable at any time if necessary to protect a noble. She often carries out direct orders without external protest and forces herself not to acknowledge (and even hide) important events that she witnessed in the Imperial Palace as a way of self—preservation and protecting others, for example, the fact that Jinxi is not the emperor's brother, but his son from A-Duo.

Lishu has deep purple eyes and long, chestnut-colored hair, pulled back halfway. Although many predicted she would be born a beauty, she remained a teenager throughout her time in the Inner Court. As a virtuous concubine, Lishu typically wore white dresses, often adorned with charming frills befitting her youth.Lishu has a very honest and straightforward personality. Like a spoiled princess, she sometimes acted recklessly, but deep down she is a kind-hearted girl who simply lacked the common sense gained during her life at a younger age. Because she was sent into exile at such a young age, she was still unsure of herself and often blindly followed the advice of others. As a result, she became the object of bullying by her ladies-in-waiting, who commanded her under the guise of help. Maomao noted that they often manipulated her, claiming that everyone else was the enemy, and Lisha could only trust them, influencing the young girl and forcing her to do what they said. And because she was still naive, she didn't fully realize it.
