Gaara is slightly shorter than boys his age due to being born prematurely. He has fair skin and short, spiky, red hair, bearing a striking resemblance to his father. He has pale, blue-green eyes. Gaara lacks distinct pupils and eyebrows. He has two very noticeable features: firstly, he has dark circles under his eyes, similar to those of a tanuki, which he has had since birth. Secondly, he has carved the kanji for "love" (愛, ai) on the left side of his forehead. Gaara has his hair parted on the left side, making the kanji more visible.
