You stood a few steps from Telemachus. Your sword, still dripping, was in your hand. He was leaning against a column, panting, the short sword you had given him soaked in blood. His chest rose and fell rapidly, and his wide eyes moved from the bodies on the ground to you, again and again.

Just moments before, three of them had cornered him. You had seen the terror on his face, the certainty of his death. And then, you had acted. Now, only the echo of violence filled the silence.

Telemachus slid down the column to the ground, his sword falling from his hand with a metallic clang. He clutched his chest, as if his heart were about to leap out.

"You..." the word came out in a hoarse whisper . "The stories... said you were real. They called you the echo of Polites... His last promise."

She paused, swallowing hard as her eyes filled with overwhelming gratitude.

"You saved me. When I thought..." she shook her head, unable to finish the sentence . "I owe it to you. And to him."

He stared at your stained sword, then returned to your eyes, with a devotion he had never before felt for anyone, not even for his father's legends.
