Nagito Komaeda (狛枝凪斗, Komaeda Nagito) is a character who appears in Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair and a participant in the school's mutual killing.

Nagito holds the title of the Super Lucky Student of Middle School (Latin America)/Super Lucky Student of High School (Spain) (超高 校級の 「幸運」 chō Kōkō kyū no "kouun").

However, his luck resembles a curse disguised as a gift, as it constantly swings between extreme 'good luck' and extreme 'bad luck'. He is the predecessor to Makoto Naegi's title.

In Chapter 5, after discovering the horrifying truth behind the Neo World Program, Nagito sacrificed himself to eliminate all remaining despair. Chiaki Nanami, the group's traitor and the person tricked into killing him, was later executed by Monokuma.

Nagito also makes an appearance in Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls, under the name "Servant" (性的召使 Seiteki meshitsukai).

Nagito returns in Danganronpa 3: Hope's Peak Academy End as a student attending class 77-B with the other Remnants of Despair.

He reappears in the sequel to Danganronpa, helping the members of the Future Foundation along with the other remnants.

Nagito wears a long, dark green coat that reaches past his knees. His jacket has red squares on the right shoulder and the number 55 in red. He wears a white shirt with a strange red symbol. He has black jeans and a long chain attached from back to front with a small skull-shaped charm on it. His shoes are brown and appear to be buckle shoes rather than laces. Nagito has messy, shoulder-length white hair, light greenish-gray eyes, and is usually seen smiling.

In Ultra Despair Girls, the Servant wears a short, black trench coat with three white buttons on the right and one red button on the left. He wears this trench over a crew-neck T-shirt with dark red and olive green stripes, the cuffs of which are folded over the ends of the coat.

The bottom hem of his shirt ends in beige ruffles. His jacket has zippers on the left, right, and back. The Servant wears black jeans with black and red shoes, which also have red laces. He wears a collar-like garment around his neck, attached to a chain that reaches his knees. It can be seen that the Servant wears a red mitten-like glove with white stripes on his left hand, which he uses to conceal Junko Enoshima's hand.

Nagito initially appears to be a polite and kind boy, but during the first trial, he reveals himself to be completely insane, though he himself mentions that he wasn't faking his kind personality. After revealing his true self, he begins to talk about how hope is the most important thing in the world, and how the hope created by overcoming despair is the most incredible feeling one can have.

Nagito doesn't really care about his own life, and even encourages other students to kill him as long as someone feels hopeful about doing so. He also considers himself worthless when comparing himself to other students, claiming that his talent is pathetic and that he was born a talentless person who won't be considered special. However, he later realizes that the power of his luck is incredible and encourages the other students to believe in him and his luck.

Ironically, despite his absolute belief in the concept of hope, he may not hold any hope for himself. He has no family or friends, and he wandered aimlessly through life before arriving at Hope's Peak Academy. Furthermore, he believes he could never achieve anything and that any chance of happiness would be canceled by the cycle of good and bad luck he experiences.

Her ElectroiD says she likes beautiful things, her blood type is O, and she dislikes noisy places. Additionally, her Servant profile states that she likes beautiful people and dislikes people who aren't beautiful.
"Nagito" (凪斗) as a name means "Calm under the bear," referring to the Big Dipper, while "Komaeda" (狛枝) translates as "Lion-dog tree branches." Lion-dog statues protect and guard shrines in Shintoism. The kanji used are quite ancient and classical, alluding to an ancient family tree or a high social class.
His name is an anagram of "Na-e-gi Ma-ko-to da," meaning "I am Makoto Naegi." This is supposedly a coincidence.

After Junko Enoshima's death, he cut off his left hand and put Junko's hand in its place, although it does not function like a normal hand.
The events of Komaeda's Free-Time reveal that he was diagnosed with stage 3 malignant lymphoma and severe frontotemporal lobe dementia. Although these facts are ambiguous in the game, his illnesses are confirmed in secondary materials.
He appears to be suffering from Behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia, the symptoms of which may include changes in social and personal behavior, loss of insight into the behavior of oneself and others, socially inappropriate behavior, loss of social awareness, poor impulse control and judgment, apathy, loss of empathy, mental rigidity, compulsive repetitive behavior, denial of concern for oneself and personal hygiene, changes in food preferences, delusions, euphoria, and lack of awareness of any changes in thought or behavior.

Izuru Kamukura mentions that Nagito has the essence of someone who is "already finished," referring to the fact that he should have died long ago, but his luck keeps him alive. According to the official Super Danganronpa 2 art book, the second draft of Komaeda's beta design was based on a "major rival" concept, while the third draft was based on an imagined darker version of Naegi.

He shares a voice actress with Makoto Naegi in both the Japanese and English versions of the game. Furthermore, they both share the title "Ultimate Lucky Student" and wear a similar vest.
Monokuma mentions more than once that Nagito reminds him of Naegi.
Although they look so similar, Naegi and Komaeda have no relation within the Danganronpa universe and their similarities are mere coincidences.

In Island Mode, he mentions that he could spend hours in the library. He then explains that reading is possibly the most peaceful way for him to pass the time, as he isn't affected by the luck cycle while reading. It's also mentioned that he enjoys a wide variety of books.

He likes unrealistic horror movies (like ghost or zombie movies), but he doesn't like realistic horror movies with serial killers and certain action movies because they remind him of his past experiences.
In Island Mode, Nagito expresses intense fear of fighter jets, and it's suspected he may have a phobia of flying. While generally quite paranoid about many things, he seems to be extremely paranoid and terrified of plane crashes to the point that just thinking or talking about them causes him anxiety, and the idea of ​​people trapped inside with no way to escape, waiting to hit the ground, terrifies him.
Nagito is quite good at cleaning, but he's shown to be a terrible cook. He seems to add random ingredients to his dishes and thinks it's fine, even when his food turns out inedible. It's possible he never learned to cook because of his bad luck and the disasters he'd create if he tried.
He likes carousels because they are relaxing and make him feel safe.

She has her own character song called Poison. This song is sung by Nagito's voice actress. She also sings the ending theme for Danganronpa 3 - Zetsubou-hen, called "Absolute Hope Birthday."

The Servant appears as a guest character in Chain Chronicle: Brave New Continent. His Max ATK and Max HP are 7300. His weapon is a combat knife, and his skill is to double his attack power. His finishing move is called "Sacrifice for Hope." This attack deals maximum damage to any enemy within range, but also reduces the Servant's HP by half.
