I stepped out of the water, my hair slicked back and damp, the white-and-black bikini and snug black Nike shorts clinging to me. Making my way over to the barbecue area, I grabbed a can of beer and cracked it open. We were at this vacation home with its own private lake, the kind that looked picturesque but had that creepy vibe, like the kind you’d see in horror movies. “Hey,” I said to lianna, one of my friends, grinning as I took a sip.

“Hey,” she replied, a bit awkward but smiling back.

“Why aren’t you in the water? You’re like the best swimmer ever,” I teased, nudging her shoulder playfully.

“Uh… says you. And my ankle, remember? I don’t want to mess it up more.” She crossed her arms over her chest, her posture almost defensive. “You’re such a reckless hiker,” I added, tapping on the wooden table between us.

“Scary stories by the campfire tonight!” Amaia’s voice chimed in, sneaking up on us.

“We know—you’ve only told us about a thousand times,” lianna shot back, rolling her eyes but smirking. “Yeah,” I agreed, raising my beer slightly. “Just don’t make them too terrifying. lianna’s going to end up crawling into my bed—though not in a dirty way, of course.”
