Hinata and Kageyama's final confrontation Hinata announces that one day he will defeat Kageyama. When the match began, Hinata jumped high for an attack, but his spike was easily blocked by the Kitagawa Daiichi defenders. However, Kageyama noticed Hinata's incredible stamina, jumping power, and sheer determination to win. He came to respect him a little more, but at the same time, he also vehemently disapproved of Hinata wasting his potential.

Hinata's team won zero sets, and the match lasted only thirty-one minutes. Hinata remembered Kageyama's name and his title of "King of the Court." After the match, Hinata approached Kageyama and announced that he would dethrone the setter. Kageyama accepted the challenge but told him to get stronger first. After that, Hinata trained rigorously, running, practicing with the girls' volleyball team, and joining the neighborhood moms' team. Soon, he graduated and entered his dream school, Karasuno High School.

Since Hinata currently lives in Yukigaoka with his mother and younger sister, he travels to Karasuno every morning on a thirty-minute bike ride through the mountains. [10] Coach Ukai noted that it would normally be a forty-minute ride, but Hinata has been accustomed to traveling through the mountains since elementary school.

Background: Hinata is impressed watching the Little Giant play. A young Hinata was riding his bicycle past an electronics store. He stopped when he heard the name "Little Giant" on the large TV in the window. [1] It was showing a Karasuno High School volleyball match during the Spring Tournament. Like Hinata, the Little Giant wasn't tall, but he still managed to beat blockers 20 cm taller than him. Hinata was mesmerized by that figure dressed in the black Karasuno uniform and was inspired to do the same. He joined the volleyball club when he entered Yukigaoka High School, but discovered he was the only member. However, Hinata refused to give up and practiced alone in a corner of the gymnasium, in a corner of the sports court, or in the hallways.

In his third year, three freshmen joined the volleyball club. Despite the new members, Hinata still didn't have enough players to form a team, so he asked his friends Izumi and Kōji, who were from the basketball and soccer clubs respectively, for help. They joined Hinata's team and soon participated in their first volleyball tournament. It turned out that Yukigaoka's first opponent would be Kitagawa Daiichi High School, the tournament favorite. While everyone thought Yukigaoka would lose, Hinata remained convinced otherwise.

Upon seeing his opponent, Hinata became nervous just before the match and ran to the bathroom. Later, he overheard some second-year students from Kitagawa Daiichi insulting his team. He responded disdainfully, only to be ridiculed for his height. At that moment, Tobio Kageyama, the "King of the Court" of Kitagawa, appeared to reprimand his teammates for belittling their opponents. His insults didn't stop there, as he turned to Hinata. Kageyama insulted Hinata's short stature and his foolish determination to win despite it. In response, Hinata proclaimed that he could jump and that he would win every match.

Hinata, like Kageyama, performs poorly in school because he's also very focused on volleyball. He even told Sugawara that since entering high school, he had never gotten a grade higher than 10 on any test. However, when he receives the necessary motivation and guidance, he dedicates himself to studying to improve his grades. An example of this is when he risked not being able to participate in the training camp in Tokyo because of his low grades, and he manages to improve his performance thanks to a period of intense study and the help of Yachi and his team.

He is also known for being a natural charmer, a quality his teammates occasionally use to gain someone's sympathy, such as when Nishinoya agreed to help Hinata with receptions after being flattered by the freshman. His friendly and straightforward personality allows him to effortlessly befriend even the quietest people, like Kenma. Despite his generally extroverted appearance, Hinata also demonstrates a serious attitude, especially when it comes to volleyball. His intense love for the sport is demonstrated by his impressive tenacity, a result of his constant desire to improve his skills. As stated by Sugawara, Hinata plays with great grit in the face of adversity and therefore doesn't give up easily during a match. Hinata can also display an intimidating expression when people underestimate him or speak ill of his team. Still, Hinata is easily frightened, especially by larger and stronger opponents. This leads him to develop the habit of hiding behind his nearest teammate. However, he recovers quickly before confidently challenging his opponents. Initially, Hinata was easily irritated before matches due to his lack of experience. He would get so nervous that he would get stomach aches or need to go to the bathroom constantly. He also became clumsy, missing his attacks or receptions. Before Karasuno's first practice match against Aoba Johsai High, Hinata was so affected that he misinterpreted Daichi and Kiyoko's attempt to comfort him as more pressure and lost control. He only recovered after making a glaring error and serving the ball to Kageyama's neck. Over time, Hinata became more skilled at handling pressure. Although he still showed timidity, Hinata had a considerably less severe reaction and was able to perform well during matches.

Hinata has a cheerful and energetic personality. He gets excited easily and can be quite boisterous, a trait second only to Nishinoya and Tanaka. In general, Hinata is very naive, which sometimes leads him to make rash decisions. However, he also proves to be quite observant. He is able to interpret social cues and can be incredibly empathetic to the difficulties of others. Thus, he often says exactly what others need to hear to propel themselves in the right direction. His relatively slender build and short stature often cause him to be mistaken for an elementary school student (or, in some cases, even a middle school student). Hinata usually wears the Karasuno school uniform, consisting of a black jacket and pants. Underneath the jacket, he wears a beige or brown sweatshirt. In the first episode, he wore the green volleyball uniform of Yukigaoka Junior High School.
