Persona Attributes

Early life

Little is known about Lisa's life before DOATEC, although it is known that she was childhood friends with fellow wrestler Tina Armstrong and was on the school's volleyball team, which explains her excellent skills in the sport. At some point in her life, Lisa became one of DOATEC's leading scientists in Germany, working with Victor Donovan on his genetic projects and participating in wrestling competitions alongside Tina.

Project Epsilon and the Second Tournament

Lisa was known for being in charge of two DOATEC projects—Project Epsilon and the more successful Project Alpha—and was responsible for supervising the projects' test subjects, Hayate and her younger sister, Kasumi, as well as Kasumi α, a prototype of Project Alpha.

When Helena Douglas was holding a public event at Freedom Survivor to announce her acquisition of DOATEC and the start of the second Dead or Alive World Combat Championship, Lisa attended the speech and encountered Ryu Hayabusa in the crowd. She asked if he would be participating in the tournament, but Hayabusa wasn't interested in talking to her, so Lisa ended up insulting him for coming in second place in the first tournament. However, she apologized, and they eventually returned to her cabin. While Lisa was showering, Hayabusa overheard her talking about Kasumi with Donovan on the phone and quickly came out to rescue her.

Around the time Lisa returned to DOATEC Germany, Hayabusa attacked the building and set it on fire. After Lisa ordered the evacuation procedures, she discovered that, during the chaos, Alpha had freed Kasumi from her cell and that her older brother was in the facility. Lisa was furious with Alpha for telling Kasumi, but, as Kasumi demanded to see her, the woman quickly calmed down and drew a pistol to silence her. At that moment, Hayabusa stormed the building to take Kasumi to safety, allowing Lisa and Alpha to escape by helicopter, along with Hayate.

During the escape, the helicopter Lisa and Hayate were in experienced engine trouble and made a forced landing in the Black Forest. Both survived, but Hayate became separated from Lisa and was rescued by Hitomi.

Zack Island

At one point, she was hired to work as a public relations representative for Zack Island. She then spent the next two weeks of her vacation on the island.

The Fourth Tournament and the Fall of DOATEC

Despite what happened at DOATEC Germany, Lisa continued working on Project Alpha and, at times, had to protect it from Helena's discovery, even going so far as to threaten the woman's life.

At some point before the fourth tournament, Lisa seemed to change her mind about the project and its nefarious goals, planning to help bring down DOATEC under the pseudonym "La Mariposa". During the early stages of the tournament, she faced Tina Armstrong in a no-holds-barred wrestling match.

While the Mugen Tenshin clan attacked DOATEC's main headquarters, Lisa also confronted Hayate and confessed to being the one who had manipulated him. He "thanked" her with a fight. She also revealed this to Helena Douglas during the tournament.

After the tournament, she participated in a tag team match alongside Tina. Considering the end of DOATEC, it's possible Lisa decided to pursue a professional career as a Mexican wrestler.

New Zack Island

After the tournament, she continued to perform a similar role on New Zack Island, acting as a public relations officer and spending vacations there. She also provoked Helena Douglas (who had gone to the island to discuss a business proposal related to revitalizing DOATEC) about her claim that she intended to use DOATEC to bring peace to the galaxy, much to her chagrin.

The Fifth Tournament and MIST

After the fourth tournament, Lisa is apparently working for Donovan at his new organization: MIST. He sends her to Tokyo to meet with his client, but she is confronted by Hayabusa, who overheard her phone conversation with Miyako and confirmed MIST's existence. While Lisa tells him that it's her duty as a scientist to make new discoveries to change the world, Hayabusa replies that her discoveries have only brought suffering to him and his friends, and then confronts her. While fleeing, Lisa accidentally bumps into Kokoro, who confronts her demanding an apology. After the fight, Lisa asks Kokoro how Miyako is doing.

During the fifth tournament, Lisa contacts Miyako without Helena's knowledge, raising suspicions. When they visit the oil platform, Helena demands to know why they are there without her knowledge. Lisa refuses to answer and attacks Helena, but is defeated.

In the final chapter, there are hints that Lisa is a double agent working against Donovan, just as she did in the previous tournament. On the oil platform, Lisa finds Kasumi in the lab trying to free Hayate, who had been captured by Rig. Lisa realizes that Donovan is reactivating Project Epsilon and frees Hayate. When the four ninjas fight Alpha-152, Hayabusa and the clone throw a ninpo at each other. The impact of the attacks creates a huge explosion, destroying the lab. Lisa is seemingly trapped under the rubble and her scream is heard; but she ends up surviving, although with injuries serious enough to require rehabilitation for a while.

The Sixth Tournament

After surviving the explosion in the oil rig laboratory, Lisa continues investigating MIST, assisting DOATEC with crucial information. Helena thanks her for her help and suggests that DOATEC would like to work with Lisa regularly, but Lisa makes it clear that her loyalty is to the research, not to DOATEC or Donovan, and asks Helena not to judge her motivations for her.

Before the tournament, Lisa is introduced to Mila by Tina, who suggests they train together as part of Lisa's rehabilitation.

In the Hot Zone, Lisa begins to wonder what happened to the Phase 4 that attacked Bayman. Soon after, she is approached by MIST scientist NiCO, who introduces herself as Lisa's "replacement." After defeating NiCO, Lisa warns her about trusting Donovan, but NiCO coldly suggests that she will perform better than Lisa in Donovan's service. Later, when Honoka is kidnapped by MIST, Lisa temporarily neutralizes the effects of Project Epsilon on Hayate, giving him an opportunity to confront MIST head-on.

Appearance 1

Lisa is a young woman with dark skin, a voluptuous and athletic body, short shoulder-length brown hair, dark brown eyes, and full lips. She sometimes wears square-framed black reading glasses, mainly during her work as a scientist.

Her wrestler outfits are extravagant and flashy, with details like shiny studs and colorful feathers. Her masks are all inspired by the shape of a butterfly, matching her "The Butterfly" persona. Her original standard outfit is a white jumpsuit that highlights her waist and back, with fabric straps that function as a "skirt." The outfit is completed with lace-up boots, leopard-print stockings, several armbands, and a mask with a cap that covers most of her head, leaving only her eyes and the lower half of her face visible.

In Dead or Alive 5, she has a more realistic appearance, with the same short haircut, but lighter skin and smaller eyes, giving her a more mature look. Her costumes are divided between her wrestler persona, "La Mariposa," and her normal look. Her new standard Luchadora outfit consists of a red and orange wrestling top that shows her midriff, tight pants with red and orange details, and an extravagant, frilly sleep mask. As Lisa, she wears expensive clothes, with designer pants, sunglasses, and even fur coats, suggesting a higher social class (her social status had already been hinted at in Xtreme 2, where her hotel room was the Gemstone Suite). She also wears many high heels, tight skirts, party dresses, and formal attire. In Last Round, she received a new haircut: a short, white cut that complements her tanned skin well.

Appearance 2

In Dead or Alive 6, her luchadora costume is now gold and brown with armor designs and an emerald gem at the center of her lower breast. She has a long pink and yellow feathered accents at the back and a matching gold wrestling boots and black kneepads. Her luchadora mask is a darker shades of gold with pink feathered accents with red several beads and the emerald gem in the center. She also has a charcoal gray elbow pads on each sides.

Personality 1

By all accounts, Lisa is, at the very least, a friendly and very intelligent woman. She demonstrates an ease in connecting with most of the women during their vacation on the island, managing to strike up a conversation even with the taciturn Christie and the normally indifferent Ayane.

Lisa also appears to be a bit of a "workaholic," as evidenced by her multiple jobs and the fact that she's almost always working—her multiple careers and constant job changes are traits she shares with Tina. She is possibly one of the smartest, if not the smartest, women in Dead or Alive, as demonstrated by her former job as chief scientist at DOATEC and her refined speech.

Working for DOATEC, the main antagonistic force in Dead or Alive, doesn't mean Lisa is immoral; in fact, she's quite the opposite, demonstrating friendly and sometimes compassionate behavior: she was the one who freed Hayate from his captivity during Project Epsilon, and she was also the one who initiated the Mugen Tenshin Clan's attack to stop Alpha-152, DOATEC's most recent creation at the time. Because of this, she also doesn't believe in doing research for the sake of doing it, but rather that one needs the right motivation to carry it out, as she makes clear to NiCO.

Personality 2

In Dead or Alive 5, her behavior changes depending on her chosen outfit. If dressed as a wrestler like La Mariposa, she is very loud and energetic in her performances, shouting and jumping, obviously to excite the audience. Her victory poses are quite suggestive, and she seems quite confident in her abilities. As Lisa, she is more reserved, asking before a fight if the opponent really wants to fight that badly. After a victory, she blames the opponent for wanting to fight and even says that he is terrible, while staring at him with a look of disappointment and dissatisfaction. She seems quite proud and as confident in her abilities as in her persona, asking the opponent if he really thought he would win, while smiling sweetly and crossing her arms with an air of composure.

Like her best friend Tina, she also has an independent side, making it clear, by deserting MIST, that she trusts neither DOATEC under Helena's command, nor MIST under Donovan's command (although she admits she trusts the latter even less).

Etymology

Lisa's name is a shortened form of Elizabeth, from the word Ελισαβετ, Elisabet, the Greek form of the Hebrew name אֱלִישֶׁבַע', Elisheva, which means "my God is an oath" or "my God is abundance".

Lisa's stage name, "La Mariposa," means "the butterfly" in Spanish. Butterflies have many symbolic meanings; for example, some ancient cultures see them as a symbol of rebirth, which may be related to Lisa taking on a new persona and becoming a completely different person as La Mariposa, as wrestlers often do with their characters in the ring.

Butterflies also present a contradictory symbolism in terms of luck; while in Western cultures it is believed that a butterfly landing on you means good luck, in Japan, a large number of butterflies is seen as a bad omen, a sign of impending evil. This conflict may be linked to Lisa's role in the series, since she was one of the people who put an end to DOATEC, bringing chaos and evil, but helped the Mugen Tenshin Clan defeat the Committee, which brought them peace and happiness.

Relationships: Victor Donovan

It is unknown what the relationship between Donovan and Lisa is, but Lisa demonstrates animosity during the events of Dead or Alive 4 regarding Hayate's capture and Project Epsilon, when Helena confronted her during the fire at the three towers. She worked for Donovan in the past, but it was later revealed that she had no loyalty to him, acting as an infiltrator against him in favor of Helena's faction at DOATEC since the events of the second tournament.

Relationships: Tina Armstrong

Friends since their school days, Tina and Lisa seem to have maintained contact to the point that Tina was the only girl, besides Lisa, who knew that Zack's invitation to the "Alive or Dead Tournament" was a hoax. Reunited on Zack Island, Lisa decided to participate in the fourth tournament to test her wrestling skills against Tina's, resulting in the two teaming up to defeat a rival team.

It's also implied that Lisa may not know Tina's tastes very well. When she interacts with the dumbbell in Dead or Alive Xtreme 2, she says it would be the perfect gift for Tina. However, when the player gives the dumbbell to Tina as a gift, she rejects it, stating that it's not her style.

Relationships: Ryu Hayabusa

The relationship between Lisa and Hayabusa is marked by one-sided irritation. When they met, Hayabusa pretended to be an observer on the DOATEC yacht, the Freedom Survivor, searching for Kasumi, who was being held captive. After getting close to Lisa, who tried to flirt with him at the time, he stole her DOATEC badge while she was showering and headed to Germany, where Kasumi was being held captive. When Lisa threatened her with a gun, Hayabusa intervened and made her flee. Two years later, he discovered that Lisa had contacted Donovan, continuing his inhumane scientific projects. Hayabusa was furious because DOATEC's actions, and by extension his own, had caused immense suffering to the Mugen Tenshin clan. At the time, Lisa showed no remorse for her actions and stated that, as a scientist, it was her responsibility to make discoveries for the world, implying that what she was doing caused no harm. This infuriates Ryu, and the two end up fighting.

Relationships: Kasumi

Kasumi seems to have known Lisa since the second tournament. When Kasumi was fighting Kasumi α, Lisa entered the lab during the fight and demanded to know what was happening. To her horror, she discovered that Kasumi α had told Kasumi that Hayate was at the DOATEC facility. She tried to silence an enraged Kasumi by pointing a gun at her, but Hayabusa came to her rescue abruptly. Lisa didn't like her chances, so she fled with Kasumi α in hand.

Two years later, during the fifth tournament, Kasumi infiltrated the MIST facility along with Ayane and Hayabusa to rescue Hayate, after discovering that Donovan was trying to reactivate Project Epsilon. Kasumi entered the room where Hayate was already in the initialization phase and, while trying to free him, a shocked Lisa entered and asked who was responsible for this. Kasumi, already harboring negative feelings towards Lisa, accused her and demanded to know what was happening. Lisa denied any knowledge of the event, but entered the control room in an attempt to stop what was happening.

Relationships: Hayate

Lisa was involved in and led Project Epsilon. Hayate escaped the catastrophic destruction of the lab and soon regained his memory. In Dead or Alive 4, Lisa appears flying to find Hayate. He thanks her for making him destroy DOATEC and for giving him a purpose in life, and in return, he confronts her and easily defeats her.

She sees him again two years later, during the fifth tournament, in the lab, while Project Epsilon was being reactivated, much to her shock. After explaining to Kasumi her lack of knowledge about what was happening, she runs to the computer room and manages to shut him down, stating that he was fine and only unconscious at a "basic cellular level". Thanks to the insertion of the overlay code, she manages to wake him up, but, like the other ninjas, Hayate doesn't seem to acknowledge or thank her for her feat, which may have been due to disdain for Lisa because of her past, which affected the ninjas' safety. He believed she had died in the subsequent destruction of DIG, although they eventually reunited during the sixth tournament, where Lisa helped Hayate by temporarily disabling Project Epsilon's containment lock that held him captive after Rig stopped him from pursuing her, allowing him to defeat Rig later.

Relationships: Helena

Due to experiments led by DOATEC, Lisa, a DOATEC scientist at the time, was ordered to prevent Helena from discovering what they were doing. When Helena approached, Lisa threatened to kill her if she found out. During the Mugen Tenshin attacks, Helena blames Lisa for the destruction of DOATEC, and the two fight on the Tritower Tower helipad. During a vacation on New Zack Island, Lisa taunts Helena about Zack's claim of using DOATEC to bring peace to the galaxy, with Helena repeatedly responding angrily that it "was none of her business." Later, in Dead or Alive 6, it is revealed that Lisa and Helena had been working together since the events of the second tournament.

Relationships: Kokoro

In the story mode of Dead or Alive 5, it is revealed that Kokoro and Lisa know each other. When they meet during a commotion in the city, Lisa easily recognizes Kokoro. Although Kokoro may know Lisa through Miyako, who worked with her, Lisa's profession is unknown. They form a secondary duo where Kokoro leads the attack and Lisa finishes it off.

Relationships: Leifang

Leifang and Lisa have known each other very well since the first Dead or Alive Vacation. In Dead or Alive Xtreme 2, their friendship grows stronger, and they even share scenes playing together on the beach and teasing each other.

Relationships: Mila

Before the start of the Dead or Alive 6 tournament, Lisa is introduced by Tina to Mila, an MMA fighter, during Lisa's visit to an old college friend. Mila is preparing for a fight against Bass Armstrong, Tina's father. At Tina's request, Mila also fights Lisa, claiming it's part of the young woman's rehabilitation.

Relationships: Nico

NiCO and Lisa met, and Lisa was shocked to discover that NiCO was a member of MIST. After defeating her, Lisa advised her to leave Donovan as soon as possible, as he was not a trustworthy person, although NiCO refused.

Curiosities 1

Lisa's last name was not revealed in the series until Dead or Alive Dimensions. Lisa's lucha libre moves are based on professional wrestler Nobuyoshi Nakamura. Lisa's fighting style also appears to involve the use of capoeira kicks. This characteristic is not entirely uncommon, as many professional wrestlers utilize skills beyond basic wrestling, and some have no prior wrestling experience. IGN featured Lisa in their "Video Game Girl of the Day" series in 2006. Lisa was the only new character in Dead or Alive 4 to have officially debuted in a previous game in the series, Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball.

When playing Survival Mode on Legend difficulty in Dead or Alive 5, Lisa will always appear as the final opponent. Largely due to the ending of Dead or Alive 5 and the way the explosion was presented, there was initially ambiguity about whether Lisa had died in the MIST lab explosion. However, Yohei Shimbori, in an interview with freestepdodge about Dead or Alive 6, confirmed that Lisa is still alive, but did not reveal how she managed to survive. Her survival was further confirmed through leaked concept art that showed Lisa's legs.

Curiosities 2

La Mariposa's age and blood type are listed as unknown in her biography in Dead or Alive 6. In Dead or Alive 6, La Mariposa's mask can be destroyed if she is hit by a Break Blow. In lucha libre, removing an opponent's mask is grounds for disqualification. Lisa was cut from the Dead or Alive Xtreme 3 cast, finishing last among the six girls cut. Two of her swimsuits from previous games, however, the Venus and Fortune swimsuits, reappear as collectible items, mainly because of the names of the two versions of the game. In a Famitsu poll about who people would have liked to see included in the PC version of Xtreme Venus Vacation, on the eve of the game's fourth anniversary, Lisa tied for fourth place with Christie.[3] Although Lisa has not yet appeared in Xtreme Venus Vacation, Misaki, in that game, had a role similar to Lisa's in Xtreme Beach Volleyball.
