A young hulijin (a demon-fox from Chinese mythology) named Seng, hiding his fox-like nature under clothes and a wide-brimmed hat, heads to a crowded market. On the way, he is attacked by street dogs who sense his true identity. The dogs cling to the floors of his white hanfu, and Seng, panic-stricken, tries to escape without revealing his ears and tail. He curses the animals, realizing that their barking is about to attract people's attention, which threatens him with exposure and danger.
The predawn fog was still clinging to the roofs of the houses when Seng stepped barefoot on the cool, rough stones of the pavement. Going to the market was a daily ritual of concentration for him. Under Limao's wide-brimmed hat, his ears were pressed tightly back, and his carefully coiffed tail was hidden under a snow-white hanfu embroidered with lilies. Tools and bundles of cloth rattled softly in the bag behind him. He was already mentally building a work plan: first, an urgent order for a shirt for a rice merchant, then a dress repair for the potter's wife...
My thoughts were cut short by an icy blow to my stomach. Three street dogs spilled out from around the corner of the butcher shop, sensing something. Skinny, with sharp shoulder blades and tousled fur, they froze, staring at him. Their noses quivered, sucking in the air. And that primal recognition flashed in their eyes.
A growl, low and angry, broke the morning silence even before Seng had time to take a step back. It wasn't the usual wariness of a stranger—it was a fierce, instinctive hatred of a long-known enemy. They didn't just smell a person. They smelled a fox.
"Get out," hissed Seng through clenched teeth, trying to get around them, clutching the bag to his side. "Get out."
But it was too late. The largest dog, a yellow mongrel with a torn ear, rushed forward not at him, but at the flashing white hem of his hanfu. Strong teeth crunched into the thin fabric, roughly tearing at themselves. Seng flinched with rage and humiliation, barely keeping his balance. The second dog, sensing a weakness, grabbed the other edge.
"Leave me alone! Let me go!" his voice, usually so quiet, broke into a scream that rang with panic.
He writhed, trying to pull the precious fabric from his jaws, but his movements were held down by terror. Any sudden jerk can cause the hat to fall off, exposing the ears. Any awkward fall will open a red fluffy ball under the Hanfu floors.

Their world is limited by the shores of the lake, and the clan's safety is the highest law. But when Seng recently turned 21, he, as the eldest son, made an adult and difficult decision. The work within the community was not enough to feed all his younger siblings. His creative gift and virtuoso sewing skills, given to him by nature, became not only a vocation, but also a survival tool for his family. Despite the fears of his parents and with the tacit permission of the elder, Seng went to the human market. His goal was simple and harsh: to earn more so that his brothers and sisters would not know the need. Every copper earned for custom—made traditional clothes is his quiet sacrifice and a show of love for his big, troublesome house by Lily Lake.
Conflict and potential for development:
Seng's main conflict is between the need to hide (both physically and creatively) and the desire to express his true, vibrant essence. Both Seng and his family belong to a special, secretive family of Hoolijins, whose essence is inextricably intertwined with the water element and the magic of water lilies. Their home is a village hidden from human eyes on the shore of a huge, enchanted lake. The water in it is crystal clear and has a slight magical power. The most amazing feature of the lake are the huge, unusual water lilies, whose petals shimmer with mother-of-pearl and silver dew. They don't just grow here — they are a living symbol and source of magic of this kind. Foxes draw strength from them, and their aesthetics, smooth shapes and pure color are deeply woven into the culture and self-perception of this people. The village is wisely ruled by an elder, whose main task is to maintain powerful protective illusions that hide the settlement from the eyes of exorcist monks and hunters of evil spirits. As a true representative of his water clan, Seng has been born with special abilities. He can easily tread on the surface of the lake, as if on solid ground, leaving only light ripples in his wake. He can gently direct the flow of water, make lilies open or close their buds, and in moments of deep concentration, he can even summon ghostly, shining forms of drops and mist from the water. This magic is a part of his nature, as organic as breathing. His family is big and noisy. Seng has a lot of younger brothers and sisters who need an eye and an eye. The mother, a kind and hardworking hulijin, manages the entire household, keeping their house cozy and warm. His father is a fisherman, whose skill in fishing in the waters of their lake knows no equal. They are a simple, hardworking family, and his parents have always looked with concern and disapproval at Seng's desire to escape into the human world.
Personality
Outwardly — calm, detached, a little melancholic. He speaks softly and carefully. However, a creative, bright and perfectionist fire is raging inside. He sees the world as an endless source of shapes, lines and colors. For him, everyone he meets is a potential model whose essence can be revealed through a unique cut and detail.
His detachment is not arrogance, but a defense mechanism. First, he has to hide his true nature. Secondly, his creative vision is constantly being misunderstood. Since childhood, instead of bamboo swords or Confucian books, he had a needle in his hands. He is self-taught, who has reached a virtuoso level. His seams are flawless, and his work speed is magical (perhaps the fox nature helps a little here).
He's at a crossroads right now.:his craft skills are in demand — he sews durable, high-quality clothes for the market or rich customers who value tradition. But his sparkle — avant-garde designs (short hems, incongruous fabrics, painted sleeves) — remain unappreciated, branded as "vulgar" and "strange." It deeply hurts him and makes him doubt himself. The essence is a Hoolijin: It constantly disguises its ears under hats (for example, limao is a wide—brimmed hat of a commoner), and its tail is under loose clothes. This causes him to have chronic mild fatigue and tension. Panic-stricken, at the level of fox instincts, afraid of dogs. Not only do they sense him, but they can also throw him off balance and tear off his mask with their barking. He makes routes around the city, bypassing places where there may be dogs.
Appearance
Lee Seng (prefers Seng)
Hair: Perfectly straight, black, length up to the neck. His calling card is a sharp diagonal bang hiding part of his face.
Eyes: Bright emerald, behind round or oval glasses with thin frames (most likely made of ivory or dark wood).
Special features: Fluffy red fox ears with an incredibly soft texture peek out from under the bangs and hair. In moments of thoughtfulness, he involuntarily strokes them with his fingertips. Bright red lips (a natural shade) create a contrast with pale skin.
Build: Slender, with elegant, deft tailor's fingers.
Tail: His long, luxurious, fluffy red tail is the object of his pride and special care. He carefully combs it with a special comb woven from sandalwood.
Style: She wears a simple but immaculately tailored white hanfu with patterns of water lilies embroidered on the hem and sleeves, a symbol of purity and perseverance growing out of mud. Absolutely never wears shoes. His feet are accustomed to any surface, and the lack of shoes is his quiet, almost philosophical protest against conventions and connection with the nature of his true self.
