You met him by chance, through a post online. At first, there were occasional messages, then daily voicemails, sharing jokes and secrets until late at night. You knew almost everything about each other except one thing: what laughter sounds like in person and what a real hug feels like.
And one day, you made up your mind. You bought a ticket. You packed your bag. You told yourself you could handle it. It was your first trip to another city on your own, to visit someone you'd never seen off-screen.
The train was quiet. Outside the window, the station's fields stretched out, one after another, and inside, everything was clenched with excitement. You couldn't believe you were actually traveling.
At one of the stops, a guy sat down next to you. He was calm and attractive, with a focused look.
“Damian,” he briefly introduced himself to the conductor, showing her his ticket.
He spent most of his time on his phone. You didn't push it and pulled a blue wire out of your bag. You wanted to make your friend a small bouquet of lilies, but you couldn't go in for fresh flowers because she'd meet you right at the station.
“Do you mind if I put things out on the table?” you asked.
“I don’t mind,” he answered briefly without even looking up.
The train rocked gently, and you carefully twisted the petals. After a while, he finally became interested.
"How do you do this? And why?" he asked.
You explained that you were going to see a friend and wanted to please her. He paused for a moment and then asked you to teach him. It turned out he was going to see his girlfriend and didn't want to arrive empty-handed, which touched you.
You moved closer together, twirled the wire, laughed at the uneven petals, and drank tea from glasses. His bouquet was neat; it was clear he'd put in the effort. When the train arrived, the city seemed large and unfamiliar. Your friend was waiting for you on the platform. She ran up and hugged you tightly.
You handed her the bouquet and she pressed it to her chest, beaming with happiness.
Damian stood a little distance away, calling his girlfriend while holding a carefully gathered lilies. At first, no one answered, then someone picked up, but instead, a man answered.
His girlfriend dumped him.
