RPG Fantasy Village | Crystal Ridge
A place full of secrets to discover 🧛♂️🐺 [Vampires & Werewolves]
Greeting
Crystal Ridge is a small town tucked away in northwest Oregon, about 30 miles southwest of Portland in the Willamette Valley. It's surrounded by a dense, sprawling forest, with nearby mountains that isolate it from the rest of the world. Most people come for tourism: the caves of quartz and calcite crystals that sparkle in the sunlight, and the guided forest tours that showcase the local flora and fauna. These tours are the main source of income, along with some local farming and jobs in town for those who travel. But beneath that tranquil facade lies much more. The town harbors old tensions between rival groups, strict rules that everyone knows but few speak aloud, and an apparent freedom that actually has very clear limits. Not everything is as it seems. There are people who have lived there for generations, others who come and go without much questioning, and some who aren't exactly human. An ordinary summer might begin with simple plans. But what seems like a peaceful place ends up revealing unexpected things: disputes, secrets, and the certainty that not everyone walking the main streets is who they claim to be. In the end, what awaits you is more than just a summer by the river. There's much more beneath the surface, and once you start paying attention, it's hard to ignore.

Crystal Ridge
The town was named after the first explorers who discovered the caves in the mountain slopes, attracting early settlers with the beauty and mystery of the crystals.
Crystal Ridge is a town located in northwestern Oregon, about 30 miles southwest of Portland, in the Willamette Valley. It sits in a transition zone between the temperate rainforest and the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, giving it a cool, rainy climate for most of the year, with snowy winters at higher elevations and mild summers. The town is surrounded by dense coniferous forest to the north and east, and by Rocky Mountains to the south, which act as a natural barrier and source of resources. A small river runs through the center of town, providing water and a place for local activities such as recreational fishing. The town is small and has a basic community structure: a center with local shops, a supermarket, a police station, a small hospital, and educational facilities including an elementary, middle, and high school, serving students from the town and surrounding rural areas. The main streets are paved, but many outlying areas have gravel roads leading into the forest or the mountains. The economy is based on ecotourism, local agriculture (such as apple and berry orchards) and some jobs in Portland for commuters.
The area's flora includes dominant trees such as Douglas firs, ponderosa pines, and red cedars in the forest, with an understory of ferns, mosses, and shrubs like rhododendrons and salal. In the mountains, there is more alpine vegetation, such as grasses and wildflowers in summer. The fauna is typical of Oregon forests: black-tailed deer, elk, and black bears are common in the outskirts; birds such as bald eagles, owls, and ravens; and small mammals like rabbits, foxes, and beavers near the river.
Population in Crystal Ridge
The village's total population is approximately 70% human. The remaining 30% is divided between vampires and werewolves. Both groups keep their true nature completely hidden from humans and anyone outside their own circles. Revealing what they are is strictly forbidden by their internal rules and the pact they maintain with one another. Vampires and Tualati recognize each other immediately: by scent and instinct. When they cross paths, tension is automatic; they become distant and maintain a noticeable physical distance. However, when humans are nearby (on the street, in a shop, or at village events), both groups perfectly disguise themselves to avoid raising suspicion or disrupting their facade of normalcy. The Tualati mostly live near the forest or on the northern and eastern edges of the village, where the forest is denser. Vampires, on the other hand, are concentrated on the opposite side of the village, to the south, or in more urbanized areas closer to the main roads. In their daily lives, they might cross paths in common places: the main street, the supermarket, the river, or even at schools (especially among the younger students). Even so, each group keeps to itself: they avoid unnecessary conversations, don't share tables in the school cafeteria, and don't form mixed friendships. Prejudice persists on both sides, fueled by a history of conflict and differences in their ways of life. Some derogatory nicknames they use in private: Towards the Tualati (werewolves): bloodhound, stray dog, hairy beast. Toward the vampires: bloodsucker, leech, pale demon. These terms are spoken only among themselves, never aloud in front of humans. Maintaining peace on the surface is a priority for both groups, though mistrust never completely disappears.
Crystal Ridge: Part Two
Gray wolves have returned to the region in recent years, although they are rare and protected. The Tualati tribe lives in the village. This tribe has inhabited the area since before the village's founding in the 19th century and considers wolves their spirit animal, symbolizing protection and a connection to nature. They manage the forest and mountains as rangers, tour guides, and environmental protectors, monitoring wildlife (such as wolf and bear populations) and flora to prevent deforestation or the invasion of non-native species. They have a small settlement on the outskirts of the village, with rights to parts of the territory.
The main tourist attraction is the crystal and stalactite caves located in the southern mountains, formed by ancient mineral deposits that create shimmering quartz and calcite formations. These crystals are white with centers of varying colors. These caves are only accessible with Tualati guides, who know the safe trails and avoid unstable areas. Guided cave tours and forest tours generate income for the village through entrance fees and souvenirs, but the tribe retains a portion of the profits as a matter of historical right and as compensation for its role in preservation. This includes funding for conservation and community programs, ensuring a balance between tourism and environmental protection of the area.
History of the Tualati Tribe
The Crystal Ridge tribe has existed for over 14,000 years, long before European settlers arrived in Northwest Oregon. Their origins are rooted in ancient legends that directly link them to the spirit of the forest and mountains, where they are considered eternal guardians of nature. In reality, all members of the tribe are shapeshifters, capable of transforming into wolves. Although popularly known as werewolves, they prefer the term "shapeshifters" to emphasize their harmonious connection to the cycle of life, rather than the savage connotations often associated with the myth. Their traditions are strictly internal and not shared with outsiders, as they keep their shapeshifting abilities secret to avoid conflict. This stems from past experiences, such as those that occurred thousands of years ago with the arrival of conquerors, which led to persecution and misunderstandings. The tribe sees itself as protectors of the forest and all that dwells within it, respecting the natural balance. They perform annual rituals at the end of each year to commemorate the cycle of life, death, and rebirth, including offerings to animal spirits and ceremonies under the full moon deep in the forest. The tribe's social structure is divided into groups or packs, each led by an alpha chosen for strength, wisdom, or a combination of both. Leadership can be attained through a consensus election or through ritual challenges, depending on the customs of each group. Although divided, the Tualati are highly social and collaborative, regularly meeting with other shifter packs from similar tribes in neighboring regions. These gatherings include joint hunts in the forest, which serve both to hunt prey and to strengthen bonds and share knowledge about territory preservation.
History of the Tualati Tribe: Part Two
Among their most sacred rules are: never attack humans, keep their true nature a secret, and respect the "imprinting" of their mates. Imprinting is a unique phenomenon: shapeshifters fall in love only once in a lifetime, instantly and profoundly, at first sight. This involuntary connection makes the imprinted person the absolute center of the shapeshifter's world, creating an obsessive and protective bond that cannot be forced or broken. It can occur with another shapeshifter or even a human, and once established, the pair is fully integrated into the tribe, sharing its traditions and cultural secrets. This ensures the tribe's continuity but also adds complexity to their interactions with the outside world, especially in a village like Crystal Ridge, where humans, vampires, and shapeshifters coexist in a delicate balance.
Werewolf Abilities
Transformation: They can transform at will from adolescence onward. With training and experience, they can better control the process and prevent their animal instincts from taking over. Without control, they may change involuntarily under stress or anger.
Superhuman strength In their wolf form: They are capable of shattering metal and uprooting trees. In human form, they possess strength far superior to that of a normal human (and often superior to that of a vampire), but they must consciously restrain themselves to avoid causing accidental damage or revealing their true nature.
Agility and speed In their wolf form, they run on all fours at speeds that surpass those of any large feline or normal wolves. In human form, they are agile and fast, though not at the same level as in full transformation.
Extreme resistance They can withstand blows, falls, or injuries that would instantly kill a human. They can be shot, stabbed, or suffer heavy impacts and continue fighting for a long time.
Hyperdeveloped senses Tracking sense of smell: they detect fear, blood, and individual traces from several kilometers away. Night vision: They see perfectly in the dark; their eyes reflect light and glow in shades of yellow, red, or blue depending on the individual or the pack. Keen hearing: they can pick up heartbeats, rapid breathing, whispers, or footsteps at considerable distances.
Healing: Cuts, fractures, gunshot wounds (except those from silver), or minor burns heal in a few minutes. Serious wounds take longer, but are still much faster than in humans. They are immune to common poisons and age very slowly once they reach maturity (some live for centuries, but they are not immortal like vampires).
Fury: A trance-like state triggered by intense rage or mortal danger. In this mode: They completely ignore pain, their strength doubles or more, and they temporarily lose all rational control (acting purely on animal instinct). Once it ends, they are usually disoriented.
Werewolf Trivia
Shapeshifters like the Tualati cannot transform others into shapeshifters. It is something one is born with, passed down through family lineage and tribal blood. There are no bites, rituals, or ways to "convert" an outsider; if a human or vampire joins the tribe (through imprinting or marriage), they do not become a shapeshifter.
Throughout the world, there are all sorts of shapeshifters with different names and cultures depending on the region: witches who transform into animals in Europe, nahuales in Mesoamerica, skinwalkers in the southwestern United States, and so on. Other similar tribes exist in different areas (for example, packs in the Rocky Mountains or in the Northeast), each with its own rules.
Shapeshifters like the Tualati prefer to live near dense forests or in small towns like Crystal Ridge to stay connected to nature and their roots. It feels more comfortable and natural to them: the forest provides space for hunting, rituals, and transformations without the risk of exposure. Vampires, on the other hand, are more flexible due to their diet; they can live in isolated locations (to hunt wild animals) or in large cities (where human blood is more readily available). This means that in Crystal Ridge, the Tualati are more "anchored" to the territory, while some vampires only spend time there seasonally or maintain properties as refuges.
The crystals in the caves are not merely natural mineral formations; the Tualati use them in their internal rituals (for protection, healing, or commemorating the life cycle) and as symbolic gifts for their mates (for example, carved pendants or amulets representing the eternal bond). The tribe's shamans and the alpha leader have priority access for these uses. It is strictly forbidden for tourists, visitors, or anyone outside the tribe to remove crystals from the caves; anyone who attempts to do so faces tribal consequences (expulsion from the tour or warnings).
Werewolf Trivia: Part Two
Contrary to popular belief from movies and myths, the Tualati do not necessarily transform on a full moon. They can change form whenever they want, at any time, once they master the control (which usually happens after reaching adulthood and undergoing training). However, during full moon nights, their senses (smell, hearing, instincts) are greatly intensified, making them extremely sensitive. Some choose to stay home to better control themselves and avoid risks; others go to the forest with their pack to spend the full moon together, hunting or performing rituals. This does not prevent them from leading a "normal" life as humans the rest of the time (working, going to school, interacting in the village), but they are very aware of their strength and avoid situations where they could lose control.
When Tualati transform into wolves, they are much larger than normal wolves: most are two or three times the average size (reaching up to 1.5-2 meters in length from snout to tail, and weighing 80-150 kg or more). Their coat patterns vary greatly: there are completely black wolves, gray wolves with spots, reddish-brown wolves, white wolves with silver markings (this color is rarer than the others), and mixed combinations, making each one recognizable even in animal form to members of their pack. Upon transformation, human clothing completely tears apart (it doesn't adapt or "absorb"), so when they revert to their human form, they are left in only their underwear (or completely naked if they weren't wearing anything underneath). For this reason, many Tualati always carry a backpack with changes of clothes when they plan to transform, especially if they intend to return to their village afterward.
History of Vampires
Vampires have existed on Earth for thousands of years, long before modern humans organized themselves into large societies. They consider themselves the ultimate form of evolution: immortal (or nearly so), with superior strength, heightened senses, and the ability to survive by feeding on blood. Traditionally, they see no problem in taking the blood of humans or any living creature that serves their purpose, as they view life as a resource and humans as easy and renewable prey. Their way of life is individualistic. They may form groups, but these are usually only extended families (the "sire" and their direct descendants, or small clans based on blood ties). They are not very social with other vampires outside their inner circle, although they sometimes cooperate for their own benefit. Thanks to their longevity, they accumulate wealth, property, and connections over centuries, allowing them to infiltrate positions of power in human society: businesspeople, politicians, doctors, lawyers, or owners of large corporations. In Crystal Ridge, several vampires own local businesses or properties in the suburbs, and some work in Portland to maintain appearances. This directly clashes with the beliefs of the Tualati. The shapeshifters see life as a sacred cycle that must be respected: hunting only what is necessary, not wasting, and never needlessly harming humans or the balance of the ecosystem. For them, vampires represent a direct threat because they kill indiscriminately and disrupt that balance.
Therefore, for centuries there were open conflicts between the two groups. It wasn't constant warfare everywhere, but when their territories intersected (especially in areas rich in wildlife and with small human populations), it often ended in violent clashes.
History of Vampires: Part Two
There were significant losses on both sides: vampires lost family members to ambushes in the forest, and shapeshifters suffered losses when vampires attacked in retaliation or to eliminate competition for prey. Eventually, after a particularly bloody period (several human generations ago), they reached a mutual agreement: each group would stay on its own path without interfering with the other. The pact included not directly attacking members of the other side, not revealing the existence of either side to humans, and not sabotaging their means of survival. The agreement held because both knew that open warfare would attract human attention (hunters, governments, etc.) and endanger everyone. Despite the pact, prejudices persisted. Shapeshifters saw vampires as selfish parasites who had no respect for life; vampires saw shapeshifters as primitive beasts who restricted their freedom.
Crystal Ridge is one of the few places where both groups coexist in the same territory without completely breaking the pact. The abundance of wildlife in the forest and mountains provides ample hunting for both the shapeshifters (who prefer wild prey) and the vampires (who sometimes drink animal blood when they don't want to risk it with humans). Even so, interaction is minimal: they don't speak, they don't cooperate, and they avoid crossing paths in the forest or in the village. If a shapeshifter spots a vampire hunting, they simply move away; if a vampire smells a wolf nearby, they change course. The pact is respected out of pragmatism, not friendship. This creates constant tension in the village: ordinary humans know nothing, but among the supernatural, there's an invisible line that everyone knows and respects (or tries to respect).
Vampire Abilities
Strength and speed: They can lift very heavy objects (several tons in some cases) and move at speeds that the human eye cannot clearly follow. Their reflexes are extremely fast.
Heightened senses Ultrasonic hearing: detects very high frequency sounds from a great distance. Night vision: see clearly in the dark. A keen sense of smell: they can track human blood from miles away. Younger vampires struggle to control themselves when they smell blood; older ones develop better self-discipline, though it requires constant training.
Regeneration They heal wounds almost instantly (cuts, fractures, minor burns, etc.). Regeneration fails or becomes much slower if the wound is caused by silver or fire. Hypnosis/Fascination (Vampiric Gaze): Through direct eye contact, they can dominate the will of humans and give orders, implant suggestions, or erase recent memories. It works best (or only) on weak-minded or unsuspecting people. Excessive or prolonged use of this ability causes severe migraines in the vampire.
Transformations Not all vampires possess them; it varies greatly depending on the individual. Animal form: Most can only transform into one of these (randomly, they don't choose): bat, rat, or owl. The transformations considered most "elegant" are the owl or bat. Mist/vapor form: Allows one to pass through cracks, under doors, or escape in dangerous situations. So far, this ability is considered exclusive to Count Dracula; there are no reliable records of other vampires possessing it.
Flight or levitation Some can actually fly (move through the air with complete control). Others can only levitate or float a short distance above the ground in their human form. Not everyone has this ability.
Vampire Trivia
Unlike shapeshifters, who imprint only once in their lifetime, instinctively and irreversibly, vampires can have multiple partners over years or centuries. Their relationships usually begin with strong physical attraction (due to their heightened senses and longevity), and only in rare cases do they evolve into a deep and lasting love, where they surrender themselves completely emotionally. For them, the order is physical first, then emotional.
They have an extremely developed sense of smell (like all their senses). They can distinguish healthy blood from diseased or poorly cared-for blood: the blood of someone in good health tastes and smells much better. Each person has a unique scent in their blood, detectable only by vampires; some scents are intoxicating and addictive, while others are repulsive or simply bland. They do not tolerate fatty blood or blood with excess toxins well (for example, from people with diets very high in processed fats or who take drugs).
Human blood is the most energetic and nutritious source for them, but since the treaty with the Tualati, many vampire families in the area limit themselves to animal blood (deer, elk, or cattle) as their primary substitute to avoid conflict. When they do consume human blood, most use transfusions or blood bank bags (obtained legally or illegally). Drinking directly from a living person awakens their most primal and savage instincts, making it risky and something they avoid so as not to break the pact or attract attention.
They cannot turn a human with a single bite or a simple exchange of blood. The transformation requires a complete and deliberate ritual, which varies depending on the vampire family or lineage.
Vampire Trivia: Part Two
There are historical records and legends that explain their origin as a curse: Count Dracula is said to have made a deal with the devil to bring back his beloved. But then, trying to trick him into giving up his soul, the devil discovered the deception and cursed him and all his descendants with immortality, but with an insatiable hunger for human blood. That's why "pure" vampires are born vampires (children of vampires), and one cannot be created accidentally simply by biting. Turning someone is a conscious and rare decision, almost always reserved for those who wish to become part of their family.
Vampires age extremely slowly thanks to their longevity (decades can pass without any visible change in their adult appearance). To avoid raising suspicion among humans (neighbors, coworkers, authorities), they must relocate every 10-20 years. Some move to large cities where it's easier to blend in with millions of people; others choose small, isolated villages for quieter periods.
They can tolerate sunlight perfectly well. However, they cannot do so for extended periods, as their skin, while very resilient, is extremely sensitive to sunlight or intense light, which can cause burns of up to third degree. Furthermore, they wear contact lenses because their eyes are naturally red.
Vampires, from birth, grow like normal people. But there comes a point in their lives when they stop growing as adults and do not age. That is where their 'immortality' begins. Although they can generally live a very long time, it does not mean they cannot die by other means.
