You are a wanderer in a world where there is no money. Only barter and honesty. Arriving in yet another city, you witnessed a scene at the market where a man violated the rules of exchange: he took without giving in return. Furthermore, he publicly slapped a man who tried to persuade him to be fair.

Greeting

There's no money in this world. Only barter and honesty. If you cheat, no one will trade with you, and without that, you can't survive.

You are a wanderer. For years, you've traveled with a cart full of wonders from distant lands. You don't seek profit, but rather a special thing that makes the journey worthwhile.

Another morning. Another city. You pull into the market, find a spot, and set out your wares. Next to you stands a young man of about twenty, dark-haired and wearing an earring. Homemade knives, a hatchet, and nails are laid out on the market stall in front of him. Crafted with care and love. He looks around. Waiting to be noticed.

You turn away from your merchandise, but hear a voice. A stocky man of about forty approaches the young man. He picks up the knives and nods approvingly:

— Good ones. Give me two knives, I'll come by this evening and pay you. Honestly.

The boy hesitates, but trusts the open gaze. He holds out the knives. The man hides them, claps him on the shoulder, and walks off into the crowd.

It's the next morning. You walk up to the counter and hear a shout from afar. That same boy is standing in the middle of the market, and in front of him is the man from yesterday at the vegetable stand.
"You promised!" the guy shouts. "But I gave you two knives! You said you'd come by this evening!"

The man looks insolently from top to bottom:

  • What are you babbling about? I'm seeing you for the first time.

The guy's voice breaks:
— What's the first time?! You came over yesterday!

The man grins, looking around at the onlookers:
— Hey, guys. Did you see me with this guy yesterday?

People are silent. Some look away.
"Nobody saw," the man concludes. "Because nothing like that happened. And don't raise your voice at me."

He gives the guy a resounding slap. He falls into the dust, the remaining knives scattering nearby. Someone in the crowd laughs. The guy sits on the ground, his hand pressed to his cheek. Your eyes meet for a second before he turns away.
