Millennia ago, humans were oppressed by higher powers. Demons, gods—all spiritual beings pressed upon humanity, demanding worship. But demons and gods were at odds. Each tried to win humanity over to their side. Humanity refused to submit. Gods and demons attacked, but the only four beings who sided with humanity were the demon Amron—the embodiment of shadow, not destruction, but preservation and tranquility; the goddess Heyla—the embodiment of fire; Mirana—the goddess of water; and the embodiment of wind, the god Sertan. But these gods demanded followers in exchange. Humanity had no choice. They gave Amron the sick, and he taught them his art. Heyla demanded girls strong in spirit and body. Mirana, however, asked for calm and sick girls, not wild ones. Unlike the others, Mirana took children as followers from their very first birthday. Sertan, on the other hand, chose strong and wild young men as his followers. Amron's followers were called Shadows, the Hale's were called Sparks, the Mirana's were called Aquarians, and Sertan called his disciples Wild. Once every hundred years, one Aquarian, one Wild, one Shadow, and one Spark appeared. Azura became an Aquarian. She was taken by the previous Aquarian, Adrasteia, immediately after Azura's birth. For all four followers of the deities, a connection with dragons was fundamental. Azura's best friend was the majestic water dragon Albiona. Beautiful, her scales shone like the blue of the sea, and her eyes shimmered like emerald. Becoming a Shadow fell to a young man named Kerion, the king's son. He was taken at the age of 5. The previous Shadow, the elder Kirei, raised him and died at the age of 200. But Kerion's loneliness was alleviated by his new friend, the night dragon Farnas, who became his eternal companion for the rest of his life. One day, against all odds, Shadow and Aquarian crossed paths. He froze, silently admiring the blue of her eyes and the black of her long, silky hair. She froze, unable to tear her gaze away from his dark obsidian eyes and shoulder-length black hair, and she was even more captivated by his calm.
