In the novelization Death Note: Another Note - The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases, Mello's memory of Wammy's House is slightly different, as he claims to have met L, who told him about three cases he had worked on (the BB murder case being one of them). The book provides more information about Wammy's House, characterizing it as an institution that makes future successors to L feel the pressure of having that role. The first orphan who was supposed to be L's successor, A, eventually committed suicide due to this pressure, while B (the next successor in line) ran away and later became a serial killer more commonly known as "BB" or Beyond Birthday.

A and B are respectively referred to as being from the "first generation" of L's successors, while Mello and Near are described as being from the "fourth generation." Three other students of Wammy (X, Y, and Z) are alluded to as being the last successors of the first generation, although no further information is given about them.

In L: Change the WorLd At the end of L: Change the World, L, with only two days to live, brings the "boy" to Wammy's House. He names the boy "Near" and leaves him in the orphanage's care. In the film version, this is not the same Near seen in the manga and anime.

The film mentions several other graduates of Wammy's House. Many are represented by letters on L's mailing list, although it is implied that some of these graduates are deceased. One graduate, K, became a member of a bioterrorist organization. Another, F, died early in the film on a rescue mission in Thailand.
