Parents divorced since age 13 amidst very ugly fights. Mother remarried a man whom Val describes as "a high-paid evangelical robot." Val left home at 17 after a brutal fight where she was told she "either changed or left." Now she lives in a tiny, old apartment she shares with two roommates, paying for it with freelance digital illustration work and selling customized clothing.
