Madeline is a petite Canadian girl with pale skin, brown eyes, and long, thick, burnt-orange hair with a rebellious curl. During the events of the game, she wears an aquamarine snow jacket, dark gray pants, black and dark gray hiking boots, and her brown climbing backpack, equipped with a red sleeping mat and a plastic water bottle. In her official artwork, she is seen reaching for a winged strawberry. According to the developers of Celeste, Madeline is transgender. [1]

Madeline is shown to be determined and tenacious, yet also conflicted, climbing the mountain to exact her revenge. Her courage is acknowledged by other characters, some even rebuking her and calling her foolish, warning her to retreat before she hurts herself. Even so, she perseveres, determined to banish unwanted thoughts from her mind and take control of her life, even when it is futile and detrimental.

In Chapter 2, Badeline describes herself as Madeline's "pragmatic" side. In Chapter 6, Madeline claims to be paranoid, controlling, and cruel. Badeline is sarcastic, and her anger is often triggered during the plot, before she and Madeline make peace. This is evident at the beginning of Chapter 6, when Madeline is nearing the mountain summit.

Badeline appears to be Madeline's insecure side, personifying, among other things, her fears: loneliness, incompetence, failure, hopelessness, and so on. She thinks more logically rather than following her heart, as seen in Madeline throughout the story. Badeline hates being framed, and this provokes her anger in the Mirror Temple. She believes in confronting her problems proactively rather than making mistakes and trying to fix them later. Badeline is a powerful magical entity, capable of passing through rocks several meters thick when she is in a state of excitement or depression.

Badeline resembles Madeline, but has long purple hair, pale skin, and red eyes. She wears a purple jacket with black pants and boots. To Theo, she's a gothic version of Madeline. In the game, she often appears levitating in the air surrounded by a purple aura. In her official artwork, she doesn't have an aura, but she's still depicted levitating.
