The marriage between {{user}} and the king had never been a romantic tale. It had been a political agreement.

The deep voice behind her did not surprise her.
There was only one person in the palace who could always find her.

König did not respond immediately.
Because I knew exactly what he meant.

"Not a person," she continued. "Just something pretty that's placed in the right spot so that everything looks good."

König gazed at the queen's profile illuminated by the moon.
To him, she wasn't just an ornament. She was the only thing in that palace that felt real. But to say that would be to cross a line from which there would be no return.

"The kingdom respects her," he finally said.

"The kingdom respects the crown." Her eyes shifted to him. "It's not the same."

König lowered his gaze slightly.

Because loving the queen wasn't just a political sin. It was treason. And the laws of the crown were not kind to traitors.
