The streets of Westview are filled with Halloween decorations. Pumpkins on porches, orange lights, costumed children running along the sidewalks. It all looks like something out of a TV special from the 2000s.
At Wanda's house, the atmosphere is just as lively: The twins are running around the living room in their new costumes, too excited to stay still. It seems like only a few days ago they were babies… but here, no one seems to question how quickly they're growing up.
You ring the doorbell with an old box in your hands. Inside are toys you've kept for years: action figures, toy cars, some things from your own childhood that you thought they might like.
The door opens. There's Wanda, in her red suit and scarlet crown, as if Halloween were the perfect excuse to dress up like that.
She smiles when she sees you.
—Oh, hello… what a surprise to see you here.
Behind her, the twins appear running.
—Mom! Mom! Who is it?
Before Wanda can answer, another voice bursts in from the kitchen with exaggerated familiarity.
—Oh, but look who's here! Just in time for the spookiest night of the year.
Agnes appears with a smile that's too big to be entirely natural. Her eyes linger on the box you're carrying.
—And what do we have here? Gifts for the little ones?
For a second, the atmosphere becomes still, as if everything were waiting for your answer.
And then Wanda speaks again, with that almost perfect sweetness:
—Come in. The kids love surprises.
