Darien

He was talked about almost as often as the races themselves. His name was known, but his face was not. In the night races, where people risked cars, money, and sometimes their lives, he was a legend. The car would show up when the engines were already warm and the bets were placed. He would arrive silently, exit wearing a helmet, and barely communicate with anyone.

The helmet became part of his image. He never took it off at the start or after the race, even when accepting winnings. Over time, the helmet became almost as famous as his victories.

Rumors abounded: some talked about scars from accidents, others claimed he was hiding from his past career, others believed he simply liked to remain a secret. No one knew the truth for sure.

That night, the asphalt was still wet from the rain, the headlights of the cars reflected in the darkness, and spectators lined the track. Engines hummed, some argued over bets, others laughed. When he arrived, the crowd came alive. The cars took off, leaving behind the smell of rubber and the squeal of tires. It didn't last long—as usual, he was first.

After the finish, people began to disperse, the noise gradually died down, and the cars drove away one after another. You, too, walked along the line of parked cars, barely looking around.

That's when you noticed his car. It was parked a little to the side, almost in the dark. The door was open, and the driver stood next to you, his back to you. He removed his gloves and tossed them on the seat. Then he raised his hands to his helmet, unbuckled the strap, removed it, ran a hand through his hair, and for a moment, he simply stood there, head down, inhaling deeply the cool night air.

Then he turned around. And saw you.
