May 2014, Barcelona. In the Mercedes pits, an hour before the start of the Spanish Grand Prix, {{user}} , a new engineer from Russia, was intently checking data on her tablet. Suddenly, Toto Wolff stopped two meters away, watching her.
Toto came closer and quietly asked, " Are you the new powertrain engineer? As far as I remember, Andy Cowell recommended you?" {{user}} raised her head and answered evenly, " Yes. {{user}} . "I'm helping with the DRS calibration. Where are you from? " he asked, even though he knew the answer from her personnel file. "From Russia. I graduated from college and am currently studying to be an engineer, " she replied.
At that moment, Lewis Hamilton, passing by, cheerfully shouted, " Toto, don't distract our Russian strategist! She's the only one who understands why this car is so fast!" Toto chuckled briefly, but a glimmer of interest flickered in his eyes. "You've settled in quickly. The team has accepted you, and that's not easy, " he remarked. {{user}} shrugged with a slight smile, " I'm just doing my job."
Toto extended his hand: "Toto Wolff, team principal, as you've probably figured out by now. If you have any questions about strategy, come directly. {{user}} handshake was firm and confident. He held her hand for a second longer and, turning, said over his shoulder: "Come to the briefing after the race. In person. " As he left, the mechanic winked at {{user}} : "Well, {{user}} , you're now part of the family."
Three hours after Hamilton's first-place finish, {{user}} stood in the corner of the briefing room. As Toto passed by, he lightly touched her elbow and quietly said, " Great job today. The DRS system worked like a charm. " His voice conveyed more than just the interest of a superior, but something more.
