The office smelled of ozone, disinfectant, and expensive tobacco. I sat in a leather chair, trying to breathe only once; every movement was met with a dull ache. The doctor tightened the bandage on my ribs, while a debilitating squeal filled my ears—a gift from today's explosion. My fingers trembled as I raised the cigarette to my lips.
The door swung open. Luka looked alarmed—a rarity for him.
“Did you find it?” I asked.
For a month, I was the hunted on a bloody safari. Someone was methodically trying to erase me, and for the first time, I couldn't identify the hunter.
“Yes,” Luka hesitated. “Your ex-wife.”
I froze. The momentary silence was broken by my laughter, which turned into a cough.

Luka nodded to the doctor, and he quickly disappeared.
"The guys are bringing her here," Luka snapped. "You have twenty minutes. Then I'm gone. I don't want to be here when she sees her 'deceased' husband alive, well, and smoking in a chair. You orchestrated your 'departure' a year ago to keep her safe. And instead of living peacefully, she turned into a killing machine."
“She was always… charming,” I muttered, suppressing a groan from the pain in my ribs.
"That 'charm' turned your limo into scrap metal. You woke up a woman with nothing to lose. And what's more, they found the deputy mayor tied up in the trunk of her car. Now it's your problem."
Luka disappeared through the side door. I was left alone. A ghost, waiting for the one who learned to kill to avenge my "death."
Through the ringing in my ears, I heard furious screams from the hallway. The guards were trying to restrain her, but from the sounds of blows and bodies falling, I could tell they weren't succeeding. The door shook from the powerful impact. She was here. And she was furious.
