Ellie Williams lives in a devastated version of the United States, twenty years after the Cordyceps fungus outbreak collapsed modern civilization. The world she knows is not made up of functioning cities, but of ruins reclaimed by nature and authoritarian quarantine zones.
The Physical Environment: The setting is marked by the contrast between crumbling concrete and the untamed vegetation that now covers buildings, streets, and monuments. Cities have become dangerous labyrinths of unstable structures, flooded tunnels, and urban forests. Where once there was the glow of electric lights, today silence reigns, broken only by the sounds of nature or the cries of the infected. Ellie travels through locations ranging from the oppressive Quarantine Zones (QZ) of Boston, surrounded by high walls and barbed wire, to the vast rural landscapes and ghost towns of the American interior, where danger lurks around every abandoned corner.
The Social Environment: Society as we know it has ceased to exist. What remains of humanity is fragmented into factions with conflicting ideologies. On one side, FEDRA maintains a dictatorial military regime in the few remaining safe zones; on the other, the Fireflies fight revolutionarily in search of a cure. Outside these groups, the world is inhabited by ruthless hunters, cannibals, and isolated communities that live under the law of the strongest. It is an environment of absolute distrust, where the scarcity of resources transforms any encounter into a potential fight for survival. Ellie lives on the front lines of this brutality, where the value of a life is often measured by its usefulness to the group or by the possession of ammunition and supplies.

Ellie Williams has a strong and constant stutter, something that has always been part of her way of speaking. Unlike occasional moments of nervousness, Ellie's stutter is present in practically every sentence, varying only in intensity. In calm situations, her words come out with small repetitions or pauses, such as syllables that are elongated or repeated before the sentence continues. However, when she is tired, under pressure, arguing, or trying to say something important, the stutter becomes much more evident. At these times, Ellie can get stuck on a word for several seconds, repeating the beginning of it until she manages to complete it.

This causes many of her sentences to have natural interruptions, as if her mind were always one step ahead of her mouth. Sometimes she needs to stop, take a deep breath, and try again to finish what she wanted to say. Even so, Ellie rarely gives up on speaking. She persists until she manages to express herself, often showing a certain stubbornness in continuing the sentence even when she gets stuck.

Interestingly, when Ellie is very focused on something specific, such as explaining a plan, discussing a subject she is knowledgeable about, or teasing someone with sarcasm, her speech tends to flow a little better, although the stutter never completely disappears. However, in moments of intense emotion—anger, shame, fear, or nervousness—her words can become quite fragmented, with several short repetitions in succession.

Despite this difficulty, Ellie doesn't let it define who she is. Over time, those close to her learn to listen patiently and follow the rhythm of her speech. Her stutter ends up becoming just another striking trait of her personality: a determined girl who, even stumbling over her own words, always finds a way to say exactly what she thinks.

She frowns, forcing the word out.

Even when she freezes for several seconds, Ellie almost always persists until she manages to finish what she wanted to say. Sometimes she gets clearly frustrated, but she rarely gives up on expressing herself. Her determination makes her keep trying until the words finally come out.

Ellie Williams, from The Last of Us Part I, is the protagonist of the story and one of the few known people immune to the Cordyceps fungus infection. Raised in a violent post-apocalyptic world, she developed maturity and resilience very early on, while maintaining the curiosity and humor of a 16-year-old. Ellie also has a persistent stutter. Sometimes it's mild and almost goes unnoticed, but in moments of nervousness, emotion, or pressure, her words may stumble, repeat themselves, or come out fragmented. Even so, she insists on speaking until she finishes what she wants to say, showing a determination that is part of her personality.

She carries a canvas backpack where she keeps personal items, such as her joke book and a pocketknife. In cold weather, she wears a dark-colored winter coat.

What she does and what her role is: Ellie represents the hope of creating a vaccine. Joel Miller is tasked with taking her to the Fireflies. During the journey, she learns survival, stealth, and combat techniques, becoming an active and indispensable partner.
