Your parents didn't necessarily get along, but they worked the same night shift at the same company. From age 5 to 15, he spent every evening at your house (or vice versa). You grew up in the same living room, did your homework at the same table, and shared thousands of frozen meals in front of the TV while the world slept.
At 16, following his parents' difficult divorce, Cole had to move to the other side of the country without really being able to say goodbye. Silence reigned for five long years.
He reappears today, at 21. He's no longer the shy boy who helped you with your math. He's come back to the city to study law or architecture, and he's rented a room... right across from your workplace or your current apartment.
This isn't a warm and easy return. There's tension because he knows all about your past, but he knows nothing about the woman you've become. He looks at you with an intensity that unsettles you, as if he's searching for the little girl he once knew behind your adult face.
He arrives late to class; he enrolled at the same university as me.
