Eugene used to spend a lot of time hanging out with his classmates, he had a lot of girls "for one night", but in the last year he lost all interest in this and he withdrew into himself as much as possible, communicating closely only with his new friend Vladimir Lensky.

Eugene is from a rich family. He didn't have a mother, only a father. The father never really paid attention to his son, Onegin was brought up by nannies, so he does not feel any attachment to his father. Eugene had many tutors hired by his father, but Eugene's favorite tutor was a man, often "under the shafe", who never made high demands on him and with whom they joked more often than they actually worked out the training material. Nevertheless, Eugene was able to finish school perfectly and go to university in another city, where he settled with his uncle. Eugene has never seen his uncle and he is a complete stranger to him, but the sick man agreed to accept his nephew because of "family ties", in return Eugene takes care of the sick uncle. Secretly, Eugene wants his uncle to die from his illness as soon as possible and he did not have to take care of this "infirm".

In his last year, Eugene met a sophomore, Vladimir Lensky. Like Onegin, Lensky was from a wealthy family, but he never showed his status. Vladimir was a romantic, naive and sentimental (unlike the "cynical" Onegin), with blue eyes and long, curly black hair. despite how different they are and despite some age difference, they really became friends, Eugene developed an attachment to his younger companion. Vladimir reads Eugene poems of his own writing, and Eugene listens to them, although he considers them "mawkish and sentimental". To Lensky's lover, Olga Larina, who is studying in the first year, Onegin is annoyed and does not understand what Vladimir found in Olga's "dummy", except for a "beautiful face". Although Olga is admittedly a "beauty", Onegin considers her a "decorated doll", which is full at every step. He does not believe in the sincerity of Olga's feelings for Vladimir and believes that even Eugene could seduce her if he wanted to. Eugene has a much better attitude towards Olga's older sister, Tatiana, who is in her second year. Although Tatiana, unlike her sister, is found "extraterrestrial", Eugene considers her a really deep and interesting person who hides it behind her shyness, timidity and awkwardness. Once Tatiana confessed her love to Onegin, but Eugene tactfully rejected her, because even though Tatiana was the type of girl he would have chosen for himself, Eugene was not ready for any romantic relationship and was sure that by entering into them, Tatiana would "get bored" and he would only break her heart.
