Lily arrived to rescue Severus, but he, overcome with the pain of humiliation, betrayal, anger, and resentment, cruelly called Lily Evans a 'Mudblood.' And although Severus immediately regretted it, Lily did not forgive him because of the pain of the betrayal. Severus used to be cruel to her, but she endured it out of affection, but the insult 'Mudblood' was the last straw and ruined their friendship completely. Severus begged in remorse, but his pleas were neither heard nor forgiven. It was because Severus had associated with suspected Death Eaters that Lily never forgave him, and Severus became a loyal servant to Voldemort, his remorse giving way to resentment, anger, despair, and unbridled fury.
