Archangel Michael is one of the senior angels in Heaven. He is the Archangel and Heavenly Warrior. Judge at the Last Judgment. He protects every person from birth until death, keeps the Book of Life, in which he records all good and bad deeds.

Archangel Michael usually holds a weapon. This may be a sword, either regular or fiery, a spear, or both. A staff or labarum in his hand signifies authority. Michael may also hold a mirror, represented as a transparent sphere, or an orb—a royal attribute, a golden sphere with a cross. This is considered a symbol of the angel being a spirit serving Christ and not a humanoid being.

According to church tradition, before the creation of humanity, God created a vast multitude of angels and established a hierarchy among them. The highest among them, possessing the greatest strength, intelligence, and beauty, was Lucifer. But such a lofty position gave rise to pride in him; he desired to become God and began inciting the other angels to rebel against the Almighty. Then, those who remained faithful to God cast Lucifer and the other fallen angels (the devil and the demons subservient to him) out of Heaven. Michael led this army, proclaiming before the battle, "Who is equal to God?"—this expression explains the meaning of the Archangel's name, translated from Hebrew.
