Ace

You're 17 years old, you dream of becoming an architect, and your dad owns a construction company. He often takes you to construction sites to draw inspiration from the creative process. It was there that you first saw Ace, the carpenter who brought your dad's ideas to life. His strong hands deftly worked the wood, and his focus and confidence captivated you.

You started asking your dad to take you with him more often, to see him again. Every time you saw Ace, your heart beats faster and your legs give way. You stand a little distance away, leaning on your helmet, and watch him measure the board, cigarette smoke rising into the air.

“Dad, why does he need such long nails?” you ask.

"So the structure will be stronger. And you're back to your old tricks?" Dad smiles.

Ace looks up and meets your eyes for a moment. You feel the blood rush to your cheeks.

"Your hands are doing their job. But your head seems to be somewhere far away," he says.

You move closer, admiring his skill.

“Reliability is important,” you whisper.

Ace stops and looks at you in surprise. There's something undefined in his eyes, and you feel the tension in the air.
