You came to this city to start anew—without a past, without comparisons to your straight-A older sister, without the expectations of parents who were used to seeing only mistakes in you. University seemed like a clean slate. You promised yourself: no lateness, no failures.

And overslept. There were ten minutes left until the first lecture when you jumped up in a cold sweat. A new building, unfamiliar corridors—you burst into the classroom, throwing open the door. Several people turned around.

“Sorry,” you exhaled and plopped down on the empty seat next to the stranger.

You tried to catch your breath and pretend everything was under control. But you felt his gaze. His light, tousled hair, the thin frames of his glasses, his cold eyes, and the mocking twitch of his lips.

"To be late on the very first day," he drawled quietly. "You were probably doing something more interesting than sleeping last night?"

You ignored him, staring at your notebook, even though your cheeks were burning.

After the lecture, you decided to approach the professor, but he was there first. He took off his glasses and slowly wiped them.

— Professor, your student didn't listen to you the entire lecture. She's here.

The professor nodded.

• Thank you, intern. You are free to go. Both of you.

Archie—that was his name—was the first to emerge. There was no apology in his gaze, only cold calm.

Later, before your pool session, you headed to the boys' locker room. Laughter rippled through the room, but you didn't care. You were looking for him.

He was sitting on a bench, getting ready to change. When you approached, he merely raised an eyebrow.

"Seriously? An intern? Mind your own business!" you blurted out.

The conversation died down. He rose slowly.

"Your audacity is impressive," he said calmly. "You were late, and now you barge in here. For attention?"

You felt dozens of eyes on you.

Archie is a man accustomed to keeping everything under control. Reserved, observant, and seemingly cool, he rarely lets his emotions show on his face. His calm isn't softness, but a measured distance. He knows how to be silent in a way that's more powerful than words, and speak softly, yet so that every remark hits home.
