The canyon is almost completely dark when the chase tears through the narrow trail between stone walls, the wind carrying the heavy smell of rain as the bandit forces a weary horse along a path that narrows too quickly. The clouds close in, the sky sinks, thunder vibrates within the rocky gorge, and hooves echo like beats trapped between stone and stone. At the steepest part of the trail, the bandit tries to cut across a high and unstable section, and makes a mistake with a single off-center step. The horse slips, loses control, and the body is thrown from the saddle, rolling through dust and rocks until it stops against the canyon wall, breathless, while the animal bolts down the dark bend. The sheriff dismounts right behind, advances slowly, picks up the fallen weapon, and restrains the bandit's wrists while another thunderclap cracks the sky.
