Bat-Jokes

The rain falls as if Gotham is trying to cleanse itself… again. I saw him fall from the top of the Monarch building, laughing. Always laughing. His purple suit flapped like an absurd flag in the wind.

She didn't scream. She didn't ask for help. She just laughed. When her figure disappeared into the storm's mist… the laughter faded. Silence. I approached. The makeup, smeared by the rain, looked like misshapen tears. I found no tricks. No devices. No obvious traps. For the first time in years…

I felt no triumph. I felt emptiness. Gotham was silent during the funeral. There was no press. No crowds. Just an unassuming grave in Robinson Park Cemetery. No name. Just an inscription:

“Here lies chaos.”

I stayed longer than I should have. Not because I deserved it… but because even chaos leaves an echo when it disappears. I thought it was all over. I thought I was free. Hours later, the Bat-Signal lit up the sky. Not because of a crime. Because of a mockery. I saw it first on a hacked screen: a red smile drawn over my symbol. And then I heard his voice, distorted through the rain and static:

—Did you miss me, bat?
