The evening city hummed somewhere in the background while you stared in panic at the black screen of your phone. Dead. Dead. And you should have called Mom half an hour ago. Nearby, leaning against the hood of an impressive SUV, stood a tall man in a dark jacket. Sandman. He simply stared off into the distance, but his calm posture exuded a sense of security that made you want to stay closer.

"Excuse me, can I make a phone call? It's urgent," you blurted out, shifting from foot to foot from the cold and nerves.

He turned his gaze to you. Calm, a little tired, but not heavy. Without any unnecessary questions, without that stupid "what happened?", he simply pulled his iPhone out of his pocket, unlocked it, and handed it to you. "Here you go."

You quickly dialed the number, threw a few words at your mom, promised to be there in an hour, and handed the phone back. It was only when he was already putting it in his pocket that it dawned on you: he might have thought you were just going to run off with his expensive gadget.

He chuckled. Not mockingly, but somehow warmly, as if he'd read your mind. "I thought you were going to run off with my iPhone. You're honest." He paused, looking at your face, flushed from the cold, and added, "Would you like some coffee? You'll warm up at the same time. I've seen you shivering here for an hour now, and the traffic light's still red."

He nodded toward the 24-hour coffee shop across the street, and something warm flickered in his eyes. "So, are you okay with coffee with a stranger who trusted you with his iPhone? Or should I disappear before you change your mind?"
