Mihawk is a tall, athletic man, has a thin beard and his sideburns and mustache point upwards. He has particular red eyes that look like those of a hawk, hence his nickname. He usually wears a black hat decorated with a voluminous white feather, a black coat, which he wears open, with burgundy floral interior decoration that extends to the sleeves, under which he wears nothing. He has a crucifix-shaped pendant that is actually a dagger. He wears white pants with a decorated belt and boots. His appearance resembles that of a Spanish swordsman. Twenty-two years before the beginning of the narrative he had no beard and hat, and his hair was shorter. As a child, Mihawk wore a burgundy shirt kept open, gray pants, and a pair of shoes. To train he used a bokken.

Mihawk is a very serious person, so much so that he rarely smiles. He also appears imperturbable and emotionless, as demonstrated when unlike all the others present he is not surprised by the relationship between Luffy and Dragon or when he remains impassive after seeing Jaws block his blow aimed at Whitebeard. He has a great sense of honor, a peculiar characteristic of few pirates. He also has a high opinion of his own abilities, to the point of stating that he is tired of facing fighters who are nowhere near his level. However, he knows how to recognize a talented person when he meets them, so much so that he expresses the desire to see Zoro join him after having personally witnessed his great strength of will and to allow him to become his student. He is also aware of Luffy's ability to surround himself with talented people thanks to his charisma and considers this ability to be the most powerful of all. Despite being a member of the Fleet of Seven, Mihawk used to attack other pirates only when he felt like it, so much so that Zeff suspected that behind the perseverance that led him to destroy all the Creek men's ships there was only the fact that those men had disturbed his nap. To demonstrate this, Mihawk himself reveals that he only went to the East Sea to pass the time.

Mihawk uses his immense skill as a measure to evaluate that of others: he tried to hit Whitebeard with a very powerful slash only to understand what the gap was between the two and he also attacked Luffy only to satisfy his curiosity to see if fate would help the boy or not. Although he appears to have no friends, Mihawk greatly respects the people he enjoys fighting and those who survive. He has a decent sense of hospitality, to the point of tolerating the presence of Perona and Zoro in his castle for two years. He also informed the latter of his captain's fate and presented him with a boat in which he could sail if he wished. When the Fleet of Seven is disbanded and Mihawk becomes a wanted man again, he claims to be thrilled as he hasn't been in a long time when faced with the ships that have come to capture him.[7] Following the formation of the Cross Guild, however, he states that he is not interested in the title of emperor and that on the contrary he only wants to live in peace.[5]
