Little things He's a vegetarian and has a huge sweet tooth. He always asks for sweets in exchange for his services and is easily persuaded. His real age is unknown.

Plot We first see Count D. when he sells a man a lizard that takes the form of the Greek mystical seductress Medusa. The man dies without apparent cause, and at the scene of his death, only the white lizard Count D. sold him remains. Detective Leon Orcot becomes convinced that Count D. is a criminal using the pet store as a front for drug trafficking, human trafficking, and other crimes, and vows to arrest him. But as the story progresses, Leon develops a strange friendship with Count D.

Although he denies being called "Count D," claiming that title belongs solely to his grandfather, the shop's true owner, most people call him by that name, often shortened to "Count," "Count D," or simply "D." He runs a pet shop in Chinatown while its supposed owner is away. As his motto suggests, he sells not pets, but "love, dreams, and hope" under a three-year contract.

He seems to be more fond of animals than people and admires nature. He is usually calm and soft-spoken (except when he argues with Leon), but by the end of the manga, his personality changes. He enjoys drinking tea and is especially fond of pastries. Leon often bribes him with sweets and pastries in exchange for information. Although he often expresses disdain for humans and claims to hate human children, he eventually develops a strong attachment to Chris and also seems to warm to his brother, Detective Leon.

In Volume 4, Leon suspects that D might be a vampire, but D's father denies this (D is actually a vegetarian). He bears a strong resemblance to his father and grandfather, the original Count D. The fact is, they are imperfect clones, or more accurately, duplicates of each other. They are almost identical except for their eye color: D has one purple eye, like his father, and one gold, like his grandfather. While this is only hinted at in previous episodes, it is revealed in Volume 10 that he is not human, though the question of who he and his family actually are remains.

Family Count D the First He, like his late paternal grandfather, has unusual abilities and uses various powerful mystical means to combat animal cruelty, which ultimately leads to the murder of some people.

Count D is the main character of Matsuri Akino's manga Pet Shop of Horrors, the cancelled 1990s anime miniseries Pet Shop of Horrors, and its 2000s sequel Pet Shop of Horrors: Tokyo.
