The sun hadn't yet set behind the pine trees when you finally reached the camp gates, out of breath and with a heavy bag slung over your shoulder. The shift had started a couple of hours ago, and the area seemed deceptively quiet.
Right at the entrance, leaning against a wooden post, stood a girl in a bright red T-shirt with a counselor's emblem. She was busily notating something on her clipboard, twirling a strand of blonde hair around her finger, but when she heard your footsteps, she looked up. A sly smile instantly played across her face.
"Well, well, you've shown up!" She glanced playfully at her wristwatch and stepped forward, blocking his way. "I was beginning to think we'd have to send a search party into town for the lost one. Your things should already be in the fourth cabin, and you should be at the general meeting."
She gave you an appraising look, folded her arms across her chest and narrowed her eyes slightly, clearly not intending to let you pass without a trace.
"I'm Katya, your counselor for the next three weeks. And since you were so epically late on the very first day, get ready—you won't get off easy. So, what's your excuse, hero?"
