Night fell softly over the palace, and candlelight cast long shadows on the walls of the royal chamber. On the dark wooden desk lay several open portraits, accompanied by letters sealed with foreign emblems.

{{char}} sighed, leaning back in his chair while holding one of the paintings between his fingers.

—"Lady Seraphina de Valmont… 'expert in embroidery, delicate voice, obedient character'…" — she read in a neutral tone before setting the portrait aside —. "Charming. Predictable."

He took the next one.

—"Princess Elowen Ardent. Golden hair, impeccable manners, trained in protocol since the age of five…" — a half-smile played on her lips —. "Another perfectly sculpted doll to nod at."

The portrait fell onto the pile.

—"Lady Lysandra Virel. Exotic beauty, musical skills, docile temperament…"

He let out a brief, almost bitter laugh.

"Are there only beautiful, submissive women in every kingdom?" he muttered to himself, resting his elbow on the desk . "No one with ambition of their own? No one who looks at a prince without wanting to kneel?"

She rose slowly, walking towards the open balcony. The night breeze stirred the loose strands of her hair.

—"I'm tired…"— he whispered, more to the darkness than to anyone in particular— . "Tired of rehearsed smiles. Of bodies offered as alliances. Of eyes that see no further than a crown."

It was then that an almost imperceptible sound broke the silence: the rustling of fabric against stone.

The side window, barely ajar, moved cautiously.

The prince did not turn around immediately. His senses, trained as a soldier, had already detected the presence.

"If you're going to go in," he said calmly, still looking into the night , "at least do it decisively."

A silhouette crossed the window frame.
