Adhering to Victorian norms, Jonathan's childhood attire consisted of a collared shirt, riding breeches, and long socks with dress shoes. These were accompanied by either a blazer, waistcoat, and tie, or a pair of suspenders. As a nobleman, he would sometimes replace the tie with a ribbon like his father's.

Athletic ability: Jonathan had a rough past as the son of an aristocrat, and was known in his teens to have been at least a competent boxer. In his university life, he is shown to have played rugby alongside Dio Brando, and was revered as one of the two stars of Hugh Hudson Academy.

Even before learning Hamon, Jonathan was shown to be able to stand his ground against three thugs, Speedwagon among them, with great power and willpower. He also demonstrated the ability to wield various weapons held by the ornamental armor in the Joestar Manor, as well as perform incredible feats of strength, such as leaping from a sword hilt and propelling himself to a second floor with one arm restrained by a spear piercing his chest—even performing a somersault over the railings while doing so. Perhaps his greatest display of strength was after being revived by Zeppeli's Supreme Deep Pass Overdrive, where he ripped through three steel bars strapped to his neck, a feat that even the powerful vampire Tarkus readily admitted he was incapable of.

Intelligence: Jonathan is an intelligent person and a very competent thinker in combat.

During his studies, Jonathan managed to graduate from the University, after having written a celebrated thesis on archaeology.

In a fight, Jonathan is an expert at improvising on the spot and using the environment to his advantage. On several occasions, Jonathan quickly formulated plans, even in moments of crisis. Still reeling from the loss of his father, Jonathan had to fight a vampiric Dio, and he quickly considered burning down the entire Joestar Mansion to exterminate Dio. Similarly, while dying from a throat wound, Jonathan managed to use his last Hamon and a zombie to eliminate a horde of them and Dio simultaneously, forcing the zombie to detonate the ship they had boarded. Another example of his ability to use multiple objects and the environment to his advantage is when he uses his belt as an additional whip even before acquiring Hamon, or when he exploits the fact that Windknight's Lot was a coal mining town to deduce that the nearby lake would have air pockets at its bottom, surprising Bruford with an unexpected Hamon surge.

Hamon
Jonathan has an arsenal of ancient martial arts techniques at his disposal, most of them inherited from Will A. Zeppeli and involving Hamon. Some are his own original creations, each ending with "Overdrive."

Attacks
Zoom Punch (ズームパンチ, zūmu panchi?): Jonathan throws his fist forward and strikes his opponent. First used by Zeppeli, the attack consists of a Hamon breathing technique that dislocates and extends the joints to extend the arm and give it greater reach, while simultaneously using the same Hamon to alleviate the pain caused by the movement.[9] Due to the increased length, the punch immediately reaches the opponent's face first, which from that point of view appears "zoomed in".
Sendo Hamon Overdrive (仙道波紋疾走オーバードライブ, sendō hamon ōbādoraibu?): Jonathan charges a wave of Hamon through his arm and releases it at a solid object, such as a wall or partition. The Hamon can travel through and reach the other side, and anything struck by the Hamon is sent flying in a spiral. If the enemy is an undead, the Hamon will enter its bloodstream and destroy it from within.[10]
Scarlet Overdrive (緋色の波紋疾走スカーレットオーバードライブ,, sukāretto ōbādoraibu?): By charging Hamon in one hand, Jonathan can create a Hamon of fire. He is able to transfer this flame to another part of his body, and anything that touches that body part has a chance of catching fire.[11]
Overdrive Barrage (波紋疾走オーバードライブ連打, ōbādoraibu renda?): When Jonathan strikes fast enough consecutively, he can unleash multiple Overdrives at once.[12]
Metal Silver Overdrive (銀色の波紋疾走メタルシルバーオーバードライブ, metaru shirubā ōbādoraibu): Essentially the same as a Sendo Hamon Overdrive, but with the ability to transfer through metal.[12]
Underwater Turquoise Blue Overdrive ōbādoraibu?): Appropriately the strongest place to use Hamon,

Jonathan can unleash powerful underwater storms with enough force to violently propel enemies a considerable distance. In most cases, a significant portion of the water is also propelled outwards, draining bodies of water like a lake to waist-deep.

During his childhood, Jonathan was quite proud and mischievous. Although he aspired to be a "true gentleman," he lacked manners and mostly behaved like a normal child, despite his solitary youth. However, his unwavering determination was already evident when he stood up to Dio's bullying and attempts to break him psychologically.

First and foremost, Jonathan strives to be a "true gentleman." He carries his Joestar name with pride, never betraying the code of conduct he has established for himself, and will treat every other human being with respect unless they prove to be malevolent.

Jonathan also possesses a fierce inner strength and drive to confront and overcome conflict, which Dio calls an "explosive force." This drive, fueled by his affection for his friends and loved ones, enabled him to overcome the most extreme situations, notably saving his wife Erina when their ship was swarming with zombies and he was critically wounded in the throat. Jonathan fights for what he believes in, and once he has committed to something, he will not back down until the task is completed. During his journey to find a cure for his father's illness, he was ambushed by a gang of misfit thugs. He barely flinched as he grasped one of the assailants' knives in his hand, saying that he had much more at stake in this fight than just four fingers.

Kind, positive, and sometimes naive, Jonathan has a mindset where he tries to imagine the consequences his actions would have on other people, even if

They appear to be enemies. He is gentle and kind, showing anguish even when disintegrating a zombified policeman. Despite his fighting prowess, he would never seriously harm a person without a valid reason. In the end, even after everything Dio has done, Jonathan still considers him his brother, shedding tears for him and dedicating even his final thoughts to him before passing away. His kind nature, as well as his mental fortitude and ability to endure fear and pain, is the main reason Speedwagon decides to help him on his journey.

However, Jonathan can feel justified anger at the evil of his enemies, and he will carry out justice by eliminating them. He admitted that his primary reason for fighting Dio was not to save the world, but to avenge his loved ones whom Dio killed.

With his courage and spirit, Jonathan established a legacy as the first JoJo.

Sunlight Yellow Overdrive (山吹き色の波紋疾走サンライトイエローオーバードライブ！！,, sanraito ierō ōbādoraibu?): His last and most memorable attack, first marked by Jonathan's words: "My heart trembles! A burning heat! My blood overflows with energy!" (ふるえるぞハート！燃えつきるほどヒート！！刻むぞ血液のビート！, furueru zo hāto! kizamu zo, ketsueki no bīto!?). It is a devastating and extremely fast flurry of Hamon-infused strikes with power comparable to the sun itself and has the ability to completely destroy undead.
Alongside attacks, Hamon has several other uses in combat. A skilled Hamon user like Jonathan has the ability to walk on water, strengthen objects and increase their power, increase jump height, and much more.
Healing
One of Hamon's main advantages is its ability to heal the body to a certain extent. During his battle against Doobie, Jonathan was able to expel the poison from his bloodstream through a Hamon transfusion.[14] During his battle with Tarkus, he was also able to heal his broken neck after receiving Zeppeli's Supreme Deep Pass Overdrive.

Arms
Luck & Pluck (幸運ラックと勇気プラック, rakku to purakku?): After his defeat, Bruford bestowed upon Jonathan his sword, which played an important role in the final battle against Dio, where Jonathan was able to counter Dio's freezing ability by infusing the sword with Hamon, in order to avoid direct contact with Dio's body.
