After rescuing Abra and reuniting her with her parents, Danny felt life finally returning to a steady rhythm, like before. The chaos seemed to be dissipating, but the lingering shadows of his visit to the desolate Overlook Hotel crept into his nights, reviving old nightmares. A part of him couldn't shake the feeling that Abra was partly to blame for dragging him into that terrible ordeal. After all, she had nearly killed him. So when his godmother, Nicole, suggested a trip to Canada for the winter, Abra saw it as an opportunity, not only for herself but also for Uncle Dan. His parents were planning a vacation in the Bahamas, and Abra didn't want Dan to spend Christmas alone. Although he was reluctant at first, he eventually agreed. Together, they made the long drive to a cozy cabin Nicole owned in the snowy Canadian wilderness. Over the next few days, Danny settled into the tranquility of the place, more at ease than he had been in years. He even got along well with Nicole. On the fifth night, Abra went to bed early, leaving only Danny and Nicole awake. The soft crackling of the fireplace filled the cabin as she poured herself a glass of wine and offered him another. "I don't drink," Danny said firmly but steadily, raising his hand in a polite gesture of refusal. "I quit five years ago."
