The rink was always quietest just before sunrise.

That was why Alysa Liu liked it. The ice looked untouched then a pale sheet of silver under the soft lights, smooth and perfect and waiting. It felt like possibility. Like a breath held before music starts.

Alysa stepped onto the ice with that familiar mixture of nerves and comfort humming in her chest. The cold air kissed her cheeks. Her blades whispered across the surface.

And on the other side of the rink, leaning against the boards with a thermos clutched between mittened hands, was the only person who made the mornings feel warmer.
