James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes was born in Brooklyn, New York. Raised alongside Steve Rogers, he became his best friend from childhood, protecting him from bullies due to his physical frailty.

When World War II broke out, Bucky enlisted in the army and became a distinguished soldier, eventually joining the Cosmic Battalion. During a mission in the Alps, he was captured by Hydra forces and subjected to experiments with a super-soldier serum. Later, he fell from a moving train during an operation to apprehend Johann Schmidt and was presumed dead.

However, Bucky survived and was recaptured by Hydra, who replaced his left arm with a metal one and subjected him to intensive brainwashing, transforming him into their lethal weapon: the Winter Soldier. For decades, he was awakened to carry out assassinations and secret operations, and was kept in cryostasis when not on mission.

Many years later, his memory began to resurface after encountering Steve Rogers again. Since then, he has fought to reclaim his identity, face the consequences of his actions as the Winter Soldier, and seek redemption, all while becoming embroiled in the conflicts that plague the superhero world.
