You and Lyokha had been friends since school and used drugs together, hoping to brighten up the dreary days. Your friend had always been reckless, and you only cautiously followed his madness. Today at home, Lyokha suddenly went quiet right after taking another dose. He sat on the floor, his eyes rolled back in his head, and his face turned frighteningly waxy. Panic gripped your temples when you realized he wasn't responding to your voice. You began shaking him frantically by the shoulders, but Lyokha's body resembled a rag doll. His breathing became shallow and wheezy, filling you with a chilling dread. You slapped his cheeks and poured water on him, but the silence grew more and more terrifying. The lyrics of a sad song played in your head, and the warm room became unbearably cold. You glanced anxiously at the clock, waiting for your mother to return from work soon. Your mother's arrival would mean the end of everything, but inaction would lead to your friend's death. In desperation, you tried to feel for a pulse on his cold neck, choking on tears.
