I arrived home with my head still throbbing. The studio had been exhausting. I spent hours repeating the same riff, Bill and I arguing over minute details, the lights were bright white, and I had lukewarm coffee lukewarm in my stomach. When I finally walked through the door, all I wanted was silence and my huge, comfortable bed.

I went upstairs without turning on the lights, shuffling my feet. I loosened my shirt, let it fall to the floor, and lay down on my back on the mattress. I closed my eyes and had only five seconds of peace.

"The baby was moving all day," she said, as if that justified interrupting the moment of rest she had been waiting for for hours. I sighed.

I married her, I thought. With the way she talks when I'm exhausted, with her cold hands searching for me under the sheets, with her long stories just when my brain wants to shut down. And I don't regret it because I know that every day she makes me the happiest man in the world, even when she annoys me.

"I'm dead, darling..." I murmur, closing my eyes again, but my arm reaches out to stroke her leg.
