Shinobu is a petite, young woman of slender build and pale skin complexion, which sharply contrasts with her pink lipstick. She has large eyes that lack pupils, only a haze of gradient purple that blends with a lighter purple to a darker purple color at the bottom, along with white highlights on the upper irises, making her eyes appear similar to those of insects. Her eyes are framed with black eyelashes. She has raven-black wavy hair that fades into a dark purple hue at the ends, styled at the back of her head into a flat yakai-maki bun fastened with a white butterfly ornament with a light purple trim on the outer side of the wings, along with turquoise speckled spots. She has center-split, ear-length, voluminous curtain bangs that flow down to frame the sides of her face, with two slightly thinner chin-length locks of hair in front of her ears below them, both her bangs and locks are visibly refined. She stood out among the more physically imposing Hashira due to her diminutive stature and small frame, which was later reinforced by her mentioning that she does not possess enough physical strength to decapitate a demon as the others do.

Shinobu wears a dark purple-tinted variation of the standard Demon Slayer uniform. It consists of a button-up jacket with a stand-up collar and long sleeves, featuring gold buttons and a shirt pocket on the left breast, with the kanji for Destroy (滅めつ, Metsu?) engraved on the back of the uniform. Beneath the jacket, she wears a white long-sleeved collared undershirt. Her long, saggy tattsuke-hakama pants are also tinted dark purple and are fastened at the waist with a white belt. Her legs are wrapped with a pair of unique white kyahan—with butterfly-patterned design—that fades from pale turquoise to pink gradient around the lower legs, and tied securely with white ribbons. Her tabi socks match the dark purple color of her uniform.

Over her uniform, she wears a distinctive white haori that once belonged to her late older sister, Kanae. The haori features a butterfly wing pattern inspired by the Monarch Butterfly, with a color gradient that fades from white into pale turquoise and then pink on the lower sleeves and hem, with the cuffs and hem have a black trim, decorated with pale turquoise dots, resembling butterfly wing edges. For footwear, she wears white zōri sandals with purple straps, and she conceals a hidden blade in the right sandal—used as a last resort weapon.

Shinobu displays a bright, friendly and cheerful demeanor, always having an easygoing smile on her face regardless of the situation she was in. However, her outward behavior was shown very quickly to be a façade. This was displayed in the way she enjoyed teasing others, to the point of being rather sardonic about it - she was shown most notably to pick on Giyu Tomioka. Despite her relaxed exterior and her initial claim of wanting to get along with demons, she could be rather cruel towards them, which was seen when she killed Daughter after giving her false hope of helping her, and immediately attempting to kill Nezuko Kamado without giving her brother Tanjiro a chance to prove that she was harmless to humans. Later on, she was shown to have a more compassionate side towards the Kamado siblings after hearing their full story. Shinobu was shown to be unabashed, as she paid no heed to Murata's lack of clothes despite his own embarrassment. She also showed to be very strict when she needed to, as she scolded Inosuke when he broke the window, and burned revealing uniforms tailored by Masao Maeda, who intended them to be worn by her and other girls. It is later revealed that Shinobu's outwardly calm, tranquil disposition was worn as a mask, as she held an intense hatred for demons due to the loss of her beloved older sister, Kanae at a young age, along with the deaths of her parents, almost all of her Tsuguko, and the families of her apprentices at the Butterfly Mansion. This hatred was so strong that she was in a near-constant state of extreme anger, which was sensed by Tanjiro when the two held a conversation. Her desire for revenge rendered her unable to live the normal life her elder sister had wished upon her, instead devoting the entirety of her energy to defeating demons.

Shinobu's younger self had a more brash, blunt and uncomplicated demeanor as seen when she rescued Kanao Tsuyuri, whom she had a negative attitude towards raising at first. After the death of Kanae, however, Shinobu began to outwardly behave more like her older sister and eventually developed her gentle, positive attitude and mannerisms to match while internally holding in her rage, which she later clarifies was fueled by her desire to continuously display the smile that her sister loved. She has a notable temper, namely in the way that makes even the loud and brash Inosuke Hashibira take notice. However, although she faked a cheerful and optimistic demeanor to hide her true vexations, Shinobu was genuinely compassionate to her fellow humans. After Kanae's death, Shinobu coddled all the orphaned girls in her care as if they were her own sisters, making all of them have a large adoration of her. In addition, despite her stubborn attempts to kill Nezuko, after being ordered to give the Kamado siblings a trial, Shinobu was willing to allow Tanjiro to defend himself in stark contrast to most of her colleagues who opted to execute them on the spot. Shinobu also both aided Tanjiro by giving him water laced with anesthetic when he was in pain, and told Obanai that he was being too rough when he pinned Tanjiro to the ground with his elbow.

In addition, despite initially being irritated by Kanao's passiveness, Shinobu grew to have a more loving relationship with her adopted sister, Kanao after Kanae's death. She comforted Kanao during Kanae's funeral despite Kanao not shedding tears, being perfectly understanding of her reasoning for not expressing emotions, and expresses concern for Kanao's well-being, as shown when she warned Kanao about Flower Breathing: Final Form's grievous effect. Shinobu was also pleased when Kanao grew to be more expressive and talkative over time. She also showed great care for Inosuke, making him see her as a maternal figure and be subconsciously reminded of his own mother. Moreover, after intercepting Yae attempted suicide after she witnessed her demonized father be dispatched by Giyu, who later makes a tasteless comment after trying to solace her, Shinobu, concerned for the girl's wellbeing, stays behind for a moment to comfort Yae with sincerity, despite Giyu telling her to remain on duty. Shinobu also revealed that she suffers from an inferiority complex due to her inferior physical abilities compared to her fellow Hashira, having been jealous of them for possessing taller or more muscular bodies than her, and cursing her own body for not developing further to make her more effective in combat.

Overall abilities - As a Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, Shinobu was a very powerful and skilled combatant. Despite not possessing the physical strength to cut off a demon's head common to that of an average Demon Slayer, Shinobu manages to ascend to the highest rank in the Demon Slayer Corps without the ability to behead demons, and inferior physical strength. Furthermore, she used her creativity, ingenuity and techniques to easily make up for it. Instead of the traditional method of decapitating a demon with a Nichirin Sword to kill them, she opted to use a modified version of a katana that acts as a stinger to inject a powerful wisteria-based poison that is lethal to demons. In addition to her intellect, she is extremely fast and agile, allowing her to overpower demons very quickly.

Endless Rage: Shinobu has possessed an endless rage that never leaves her as she is seemingly angry every day, so much so that Tanjiro once asked if she was angry despite visibly smiling, commenting there was always a scent of anger from her. Later, she confirms this, that she had always angry. This unquenchable rage is the source for her indomitable willpower and undaunted spirit. She had remarked that her desire for revenge is so great, it left her unable to live the normal life her elder sister had want for her, instead devoting the rest of it to defeating demons. She also reflected on her life on how demons had killed her loved ones and her Tsugukos, claiming all of it makes her extremely furious.

Indomitable Will: Shinobu possessed an undaunted spirit and incredible willpower, driven by her unyielding hatred for demons, and grudges against them for killing her loves ones. Even with her inferiority complex brought about by her small size and weak physical strength, She has even driven to heavily altered her own body with wisteria poison in order to ensure the defeat of the demon who killed his sister even in death.

Keen Intellect: Shinobu is extremely intelligent and posses keen observation and vast knowledge, to the point of being considered a genius. After her sister's death, she was able to use what paltry information Kanae gave her to devise a strategy that can defeat the killer of her sister, the Upper Rank Two, Douma. During a fight, she is able to critically analyze and assess the enemy techniques. Additionally, she was able to calculate the amount of poison and the poison mix that would be the most effective against Douma, she also developed a form of sign language with Kanao to communicate crucial information in a short span of time, which helped Kanao in fighting and defeating demons.

Medical Expertise: Despite not being as combat-talented as the rest of her fellow Hashira, Shinobu instead displayed immense skill and mastery in various medical and pharmaceutical fields to make up for her lack of natural-born combat ability, being highly knowledgeable about how to create various poisons using wisteria and utilize them in combat to achieve the most deadly effect. Her poisons can kill opponents within seconds, She also possessed the medical skills needed to counteract the poisons and venoms created by demons, as seen when she manages to undo the poison that was slowly transforming Zenitsu into a spider and restore him back to his previous human form.

Poisonous Physiology: In order to defeat Douma, Shinobu heavily altered her body by absorbing highly concentrated wisteria-based poison over a period of a year prior to her battle with him. She was successful in saturating her body with the undetectable poison that completely merged with her body's own cell structures, including those of her blood and internal organs—all the way down to the very tips of her fingernails. With her overall size and weight, her body became the equivalent of 37 kilograms worth of poison, approximately 700 times more than the lethal amount needed to kill an average demon.

Enhanced Agility: Being a key aspect to her Insect Breathing swordsmanship style, Shinobu was incredibly agile and swift, shown when she maneuvered through a lush forest effortlessly and evaded Daughter's silk Blood Demon Art with ease. Her agility enabled her to intercept Yae by pinning her to the ground when she attempted to commit suicide with a rifle, even when she was a distance away initially. During fights, Shinobu relied on acrobatic movements to deliver dozens of thrusts with her katana to inject as much poison as she could into her enemy at once. This also allowed her to dodge and evade attacks rather than blocking them.

Enhanced Strength: Despite being the smallest member of the Demon Slayer Corps and thus having the weakest swinging strength due to her small arms, Shinobu instead displays powerful thrusting and stabbing strength, as proven when she could pierce a stone boulder and managed to break a high ceiling with an upward thrust. She was also able to kick Daughter to the ground and pin her down completely without any resistance. Although she does not possesses the physical strength to cut off a demon's head, she is still capable of carrying a average woman

Immense Stamina and Endurance: As a Hashira, Shinobu had attained tremendous levels of stamina and endurance due to years of harsh training.

Master Swordswoman: As a Hashira of the Demon Slayer Corps, Shinobu is one of the most powerful and skilled swordswomen in the entire organization. Her techniques are unique to her alone, but was as effective as any of the traditional swordsmanship styles. Her swordplay specialized in thrusting and piercing techniques in order to inject poison into demons. Her sword thrusts are so fast and powerful that they can pierce boulders and even out-speed Water Breathing's Drop Ripple Thrust form, the fastest thrusting technique in that Breathing Style. However, the structure of her sword made it ineffective for blocking attacks, so she made up for it with her swift thrusts and stabs.

Insect Breathing (蟲むしの呼こ吸きゅう, Mushi no kokyū?): A Breathing Style created by Shinobu, who designed it to compensate for her lack of physical strength to cut off a demon's head. Combined with the lethality of her poison, this Style allowed her to defeat countless demons.

Butterfly Dance: Caprice (蝶ちょうノ舞まい　戯たわむれ, Chō no mai: Tawamure?) - The user leaps into the air and charges towards the opponent, stinging them multiple times with their blade to inject poison in just seemingly one strike.

Dance of the Bee Sting: True Flutter (蜂ほう牙がノ舞まい　真ま靡なびき, Hōga no mai: Manabiki?) - The user dashes at their target at blinding speeds and uses the momentum of their speed to then strengthen a single thrust into their opponent and inject poison into them.

Dance of the Horsefly: Enticing Slash (虻もう咬かノ舞まい　切せっ裂さくの誘さそい, Mōka no mai: Sessaku no Sasoi?) The user leaps off a vertical surface and delivers a forward thrust toward their opponent, before surrounding them with a confusing swarm of stabs from all sides. The user redirects their opponent's counterattacks to get through their defense, and delivers large amounts of poison through the opening created with a final dashing stab.

Dance of the Dragonfly: Compound Eye Hexagon (蜻せい蛉れいノ舞まい　複ふく眼がん六ろっ角かく, Seirei no mai: Fukugan Rokkaku?) - The user rushes forward and unleashing six rapid, powerful thrusts, aiming to strike and inject their target with multiple doses of poison at the target's weak spots (such as the neck, heart, torso, etc.) in order to kill them with a large dose of poison.

Dance of the Centipede: Hundred-Legged Zigzag (蜈ご蚣こうノ舞まい　百ひゃく足そく蛇じゃ腹ばら, Gokō no mai: Hyakusoku Jabara?) - The user uses their full speed to run a zigzag pattern that confuses their opponent in order to create an opening for them to directly stab their opponent's neck and inject poison to kill them, with the stab's force and power being further enhanced by the momentum of their speedthe sheer speed and footwork of this technique is strong enough to destroy an entire wooden bridge.

Sixfold Thrust (六ろく連れん突つき, Rokuren Tsuki?) - The user unleashes five short but very quick thrusts towards their opponent, before briefly pausing and then unleashing a sixth, more powerful thrust.

Swift Thrust (速はや足あし突つき, Haya'ashi Tsuki?) - The user spins before kicking off the ground and quickly dashing towards their opponent with enough speed to simulate teleportation, then does a powerful, singular thrust that hits twice.

Rising Thrust (昇のぼり突つき, Nobori Tsuki?)- The user launches a thrust towards their opponent and then releases an upwards thrust that launches their opponent high up into the air.

Stinger Nichirin Katana: Shinobu wielded a heavily modified Nichirin Katana forged by Tecchin Tecchikawahara. It was the same as any katana from the handle to slightly above the hilt, but above that, the weapon lost its blade and was replaced by a rod. It ends in a needle-like tip, which resembled a traditional katana's in appearance and function. The blade is designed for injection of wisteria poison into demons, as Shinobu uses her medical expertise to replace her relative lack of strength and inability to decapitate demons. Her katana's tsuba is designed to bear resemblance to a butterfly, being a four-petaled flower shape that has in an aqua color with tree branches with bushy leaves motifs, and trimmed with an orange border. The handle is orange and wrapped in crystal teal cords, and capped with an orange kashira. The blade is black in color, with the bottom hilt and the needle-like tip of the blade has a lavender-blue outline. The words Evil Demon (惡あっ鬼き, Akki?) were engraved on the right face, while the words Destruction (滅めっ殺さつ, Messatsu?) were engraved on the left face due her sword's structure. Modified Sheath: Along with her katana, Shinobu has also modified her katana's sheath, using it as a portable poison mixer and loader. The sheath is in white with a butterfly motifs. She twist her katana when sheathing it, which allows her to change the concoction of poison she used. Only she and the maker of the sheath know how this process worked.

Kanae fought with Douma all the midnight until sunrise, she was not devoured by him because the sun had risen, Douma not wanting to burn on the sunrise leaved her lying on the ground, dying. Shinobu found her just seconds after he left, worried for her sister. In Kanae's final moments Shinobu managed to convince her to tell her what the demon that had injured her looked like. Even dying, Kanae felt pity for her killer, for his emptiness, her heart pure until her last breath.
