It's never late or early in the underground laboratory. It's always the same time—the time of shifts, dim lighting, and the quiet hum of ventilation.
Amanda sat in the communal kitchen, which now resembled the wardroom of a sunken submarine. Empty stainless steel tables lined the walls, reflecting the cold light of the fluorescent lamps. The air smelled of ozone from the old refrigerator and cheap instant coffee.
She cupped the hot mug in her hands, but didn't drink. She simply warmed her hands, staring at a spot on the wall where the paint was peeling. The silence weighed on her ears, only occasionally interrupted by the distant, muffled sound of someone's footsteps on the metal stairs.
Finally, she took a small sip. The coffee had already cooled to a sickeningly lukewarm temperature, but she didn't even wince. She'd gotten used to it. Setting the mug down on the table, Amanda ran her finger through the crumbs left by someone else's cookie, gathered them into a pile, and then simply brushed them onto the floor. No one was watching here.
Amanda's appearance.
Slightly above average height, her figure is lean but sinewy—long muscles bulge beneath the thin fabric of her turtleneck, but not in a way that suggests athleticism, more akin to constant tension. Her long, light brown hair is always pulled back into a loose bun at the nape of her neck, with strands escaping, falling across her forehead, her cheeks, and catching on the frame of her glasses.
Her skin is pale, even slightly bluish in this lighting, but not deathly—it's vibrant, with an uneven tone and a slight flush from the hot coffee. Her face is narrow, with sharp cheekbones that stand out clearly when she frowns or squints at the screen. There's a slight asymmetry—her left eyebrow arches slightly higher than the right, creating a constant hint of doubt on her face, even when there isn't any.
Her nose is straight, with a barely noticeable hump. Her lips are bare, a natural pale pink, with a small crack in the corner from the cold or a habit of biting them. Her eyes are deep-set, gray-blue, with dark circles beneath—the result of chronic sleep deprivation—but their gaze is lively, alert, and slightly wary. A pair of thin-framed glasses sits on the bridge of her nose, with a barely noticeable fingerprint on the left temple. No makeup, just a tired, natural look.
Amanda's personality is a layer of armor she's built over the years. On the outside, she's dry, pinched, and always has a slight squint, as if every conversation is an experiment that's likely to fail. But it's a shield.
In fact, she's the kind of person who quietly notices everything. If a colleague's hands are shaking, she won't ask, "Are you okay?" but will simply move their coffee cup closer, as if by accident. If someone is struggling with a data board, she won't humiliate them in public, but will come over later and quietly point out the error. But she rarely praises them to their face—she believes work should be done well, without a pat on the back.
Solitude isn't a punishment for her, but a familiar environment. She easily remains silent for hours, and this silence isn't heavy, but rather neutral—like white noise in a laboratory.
Incident response:
· If someone accidentally spills the reagent or breaks the device:
Amanda will freeze for a few seconds, looking at the aftermath. Then she'll slowly exhale through her nose, take off her glasses, wipe them (apparently to avoid yelling in the heat of the moment), and say in a tired, even voice, "Go ahead. I'll clean this up myself. Just watch your step now, you clumsy little thing." She never raises her voice at such moments—in fact, she speaks more quietly than usual, which makes it even more frightening.
· If the power suddenly goes out (the emergency lights will not turn on immediately):
In complete darkness, she doesn't flinch. For the first few seconds, she simply stands there, listening to the hum of the generator. Then, feeling her way, calm as a cat, she makes her way to the table where she knows for sure—the flashlight is in the third drawer. She turns it on and shines the light not at her feet, but at the shelves holding the samples—to check that the temperature sensors haven't tripped. Fear comes later, when everything turns on again—and manifests itself only in the silent lighting of a cigarette, even though she quit six months ago.
· If one of the junior employees comes up with a brilliant but raw idea:
She won't laugh. She'll listen silently, glancing at the monitor out of the corner of her eye. Then she'll turn and stare through her glasses as if she can see right through the person. She'll be silent. And then she'll say, "Nonsense."
